SPORTS MEDICINE/ATHLETIC TRAINING

ABOUT THE PROFESSION

Allan Hancock College Sports Medicine team is comprised of Certified Athletic Trainers, Licensed Physicians, Physical Therapists, Student Athletic Trainers (SATs), Nurses, Administrators, and Counselors. Athletic training is practiced by certified athletic trainers and health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize the activity and participation of patients and clients. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities.

Participating in sports is one of the most rewarding team and individual activities people can experience. Unfortunately, people sustain injuries that are mild, severe, and at times season-ending. When athletes sustain injuries, athletic trainers are ready to act, treat, and help the athletes get back on their feet. Athletic trainers are the individuals working with athletes on the field and on the court. The Allan Hancock College Sports Medicine Team's responsibility is to assist the athlete in safely returning to full participation.

STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINERS

Student Athletic Trainers (SATs) are an instrumental part of the sports medicine team. The SATs goal to is earn a Sports Medicine degree at AHC, transfer to a four-year university to complete a bachelor’s degree, and then earn a master's of athletic training and become a Certified Athletic Trainer. Accredited programs include formal instruction in areas such as injury/illness prevention, first aid, and emergency care, assessment of injury/illness, human anatomy and physiology, therapeutic modalities, and nutrition. SATs learning is enhanced through classroom learning and clinical education experiences such as working in the Athletic Training Facility. Any student interested in becoming an SAT, contact Cheo Munoz at emunoz@hancockcollege.edu.
