Hancock downs cold-shooting Vaqueros 71-50

Hancock opened with a 9-2 lead and never looked back on Saturday in a 71-50 women's basketball win over SBCC in Santa Maria.

Tayler Lee-Hammer had 22 points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs (12-7, 1-2 WSC North) and Syenna Ramirez added 19 points and six assists. Hancock outshot the Vaqueros 50 to 38 percent in the first two quarters to build a 38-25 halftime edge.

Destinee King scored 23 points with seven rebounds and four steals for the Vaqueros, who had their five-game win streak snapped and fell to 12-7 overall and 2-1 in the WSC North.

Hancock won the shooting battle 50.9 to 37 percent and outrebounded the Vaqueros 30-27. It's just the second time this season that the Vaqueros have lost the board battle. The Bulldogs made 5-11 from 3-point range compared to 2-11 for the Vaqueros.

"We could not make anything tonight," said coach Sandrine Krul. "It was one of those games that caught up to us. We had too many turnovers and we didn't respond or defend."

King had 22 points and six rebounds after three quarters. The Vaqueros only made 2-10 from the field in the fourth quarter and were outscored 18-6.

"As I always say to the team after a loss, 'We are not as bad as we think we are and don't lose perspective,' " said Krul. "We just couldn't get over the hump tonight."
