No. 15 Hancock Erases Early Deficit, Beats West Hills 9-6 in Home Opener

A four-run seventh inning broke a 5-5 tie as the Allan Hancock College baseball team won its home opener against West Hills College Coalinga 9-6 on Tuesday afternoon. The No. 15 Bulldogs improved to 2-0 and overcame an early 5-1 deficit. West Hills dropped to 0-4.

West Hills broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the fourth inning against Hancock starter Kyle King. The Bulldogs answered with three runs in the fifth when Zach Lampreia singled home Colton Studebaker, Tim Mahoney scored on a wild pitch and Jacob Tonascia tripled to drive in Lampreia to pull Hancock to within 5-4.

Center fielder Colby Barrick led off the sixth with a single and moved to third on a grounder and fly ball. Lampreia delivered a two-out single to drive in Barrick with the tying run.

The game remained tied until the home half of the eighth. Hunter Christensen doubled, Ryan Peinado was hit by a pitch and Justin Daraban reached on a fielder's choice. With the bases loaded, Barrick racked a single to score Christensen and Daraban with the go-ahead runs. Studebaker followed with a basehit to drive in Christensen to make it 8-5. Later in the inning, after Studebaker stole second base, Mahoney reached on an error by the shortstop that allowed Studebaker to cross home plate to cap the four-run frame.

Hancock finished with nine hits. Barrick, a Santa Ynez High School graduate and Preseason All-American, went two for four with 2 RBI and one walks. Lampreia, Hancock's shortstop, had two hits and drove in two runs. Christensen had two doubles and drove in one. Studebaker stole two bases, while Mahoney, a St. Joseph High School graduate, stole one base, had one hit and drove in a run.

The Bulldogs drew nine walks.

King earned a no-decision for the Bulldogs. The sophomore left-handed pitcher went five and two-thirds innings, allowed five hits, five runs, four of them earned, and struck out five. Freshman pitcher Walker Armstrong, a St. Joseph High School graduate, earned the win with two and one-third innings of shutout relief. He scattered two hits and fanned three. Tonascia earned the save and allowed one run and one hit in the ninth inning.

Hancock will complete the home-and-away series with West Hills on Friday in Coalinga. First pitch will be at 2 p.m.
