Hancock Baseball Suffers First Loss, Falls 5-2 to Bakersfield

Despite collecting more hits than Bakersfield City College, the Allan Hancock College baseball team fell 5-2 to the Renegades on Tuesday afternoon in Santa Maria. The Bulldogs lost for the first time in 2016 and fell to 3-1. Bakersfield improved to 5-1.

Colby Barrick, Tim Mahoney, Wyatt Coll and Hunter Christensen had two hits apiece for the Bulldogs.

The Renegades struck first with two runs in the third inning against Hancock starting pitcher Walker Armstrong. Bakersfield scored three times in the sixth, two of those were unearned and came against freshman left-hander Jason Terrones.

Hancock got on the board in the bottom half when Mahoney was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Coll drew a two-out walk to extend the inning, Christensen singled to drive in Mahoney to put Hancock on the board down 5-1.

Mahoney, a St. Joseph High School graduate, delivered a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh to drive in Barrick.

The Bulldogs threatened with two men on and one out in the eighth, but could not pull any closer to the Renegades.

Armstrong, a St. Joseph High School graduate, took the loss in his first collegiate start to fall to 1-1. He scattered four hits and three runs in five-plus innings. He struck out six and issued one walk.

Terrones allowed three hits and two unearned runs in two innings of relief.

Redshirt freshman Matt Reynolds retired one hitter and walked one in the eighth. Skylar Bischoff retired all five batters he faced, two via the strikeout, for the Bulldogs.

Monty Stevens earned the win for Bakersfield. He allowed eight hits and two runs over six and two-third innings. He struck out eight and walked three. Cyrus Parson earned the save with two shutout innings to preserve the win.

Hancock will look to get back on track during a three-day tournament at College of the Canyons. The Bulldogs will play Canyons on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m.; San Diego Mesa on Friday at 1 p.m.; and Rio Hondo on Saturday at 2 p.m.
