Armstrong Shines, Bulldogs Blank Porterville 4-0

Walker Armstrong threw eight shutout innings and the offense delivered a few clutch hits to lead the Allan Hancock College baseball team to a 4-0 win over Porterville to open a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs improved to 9-8 overall, while Porterville dropped to 6-11.

Colby Barrick led off the bottom of the first with a single, stole second and moved to third on a bad throw by the Porterville catcher. With two outs, Kyle von Tillow delivered a clutch single to plate Barrick with the first run of the game. After he stole second, von Tillow scored on a two-out single from Tim Mahoney to give Hancock a 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs doubled their lead with two more in the fourth. von Tillow singled and Mahoney was hit by a pitch. After both runners advanced 90 feet, Wyatt Coll singled in von Tillow and moved Mahoney to third to make it 3-0 Bulldogs. Zach Lampreia followed with a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Mahoney to tag and score.

Armstrong took care of the rest. The freshman walked one and struck out four in eight innings of three-hit ball. Jason Torrones threw a scoreless ninth to seal the win. He picked up his third win and his earned run average dropped to 0.97.
