Armstrong Throws Shutout, Ackerman Drives in Four in Hancock Baseball's 6-0 Win at Oxnard

Walker Armstrong threw a three-hit shutout, and Nash Ackerman collected a career high three hits and tied a career high with 4 RBI to lead the Allan Hancock College baseball team to a 6-0 win at Oxnard in a Western State Conference game Tuesday afternoon. The Bulldogs snapped a three-game skid to improve to 5-8 in conference and 12-18 overall. The Condors fell to 2-11 in league and 12-18-1 on the season.

Armstrong faced three batters over the minimum on his way to his first career complete-game shutout and the first by a Hancock pitcher in three years. The right-hander allowed just three hits and struck out five. He did not issue a walk.

Hancock pushed a run across in the third when Chris Taitague led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Ryan Peinado. After a fly ball to right field allowed Taitague to tag up and advance to third, Wyatt Coll singled home Taitague to give Hancock a 1-0 lead.

Hancock added three more in the fourth. Freshman Dylan Maiden led off with a single. Nate Alcantar reached on an Oxnard error. Both runners advanced 90 feet into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Brendan Gomez. Ackerman followed with a two-run double to make it 3-0 Bulldogs. Ackerman, a freshman, later scored when Peinado reached on another Oxnard error to push Hancock's lead to 4-0.

The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the fifth when Maiden and Alcantar singled and Gomez was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Ackerman stepped up and stroked a two-run single to drive in Maiden and Alcantar and give Hancock a 6-0 advantage.

The Bulldogs finished with 12 hits, including three from Ackerman, and two apiece from Coll and Maiden. Alcantar and Maiden both scored twice for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs will return home to play the Condors on Thursday before hosting Moorpark Friday. Both games will start at 2:30 p.m. Hancock will host its annual Spring Classic next Tuesday through Thursday. The eight-team field includes Cuesta, and three teams ranked in the top 20 in the state—No. 14 Fresno City, No. 15 Canyons and No. 20 Merced.
