Hancock Baseball Closes Season with Two-Game Series against Cuesta

Coming off a 3-1 week, the Allan Hancock College baseball team will close its 2017 season with a two-game series against Cuesta College and a chance to eliminate the Cougars from a shot at a share of the conference title. The Bulldogs, who are 8-10 in Western State Conference play and 16-22 overall, will play at Cuesta on Tuesday, April 25, before hosting the Cougars on Thursday, April 27. Both games will start at 2:30 p.m.

Cuesta is tied with Moorpark for second place at 10-8 in league and 17-21 overall. The Cougars are 1.5 games behind first place Santa Barbara, which is 11-6 in league with three league games to play. SBCC faces Oxnard (5-12,17-19-1) on Monday in a make-up game before taking on Ventura (9-9, 19-19).

Last week, Hancock erased a 3-1 deficit in the eighth inning to come from behind to beat Moorpark 8-3. Chad Jones (Faith Lutheran HS) delivered a two-run single in the eighth. Wyatt Coll (Righetti HS) clubbed a three-run home run, and Nash Ackerman (Arroyo Grande HS) drove in an insurance run by successfully executing a suicide squeeze. Kyle von Tillow (Santa Ynez HS), Jones and Josh Harmonay (Faith Lutheran HS) each had two hits in the win. Walker Armstrong earned the win with nine strikeouts over seven innings. He allowed one earned run and walked two hitters. Wyatt Standley (Ferndale HS) earned the save with two shutout innings. Two days later, Hancock could not overcome an early 5-0 deficit in a 5-4 loss to Ventura. von Tillow, Armstrong and Harmonay had two hits apiece. Coll added three more hits in the loss to Ventura. 

Ackerman delivered a walk-off single in a thrilling 4-3 win over Moorpark the following day. Ackerman, Armstrong and Coll had three hits apiece to lead Hancock's 13-hit attack. Armstrong also earned the win with 2 2/3 innings of relief.

Hancock ended the week by erasing an early 5-0 deficit and scoring three runs in the ninth inning for a 7-6 victory at Ventura. Armstrong enjoyed a career day with a 5-for-5 effort, while Ryan Peinado (St. Joseph HS) went 3-for-4. Freshman Quinntin Perez (St. Joseph HS), Harmonay, Chris Taitague (Lompoc HS) and Dylan Maiden (Cabrillo HS) added two hits apiece. Maiden earned the win in relief with two scoreless innings.

With two games to go in the season, Perez still leads the team with a .391 batting average with 20 RBI. Armstrong is hitting .313 at the plate, while he is 7-5 with a 1.89 ERA and 75 strikeouts over 90 1/3 innings pitched. Harmonay is hitting .306 with 11 doubles, 28 runs, 25 RBI and 25 walks. Ackerman leads the team with 26 RBI.
