Bulldogs Fall 9-4 at Santa Barbara, Host Oxnard Friday

Reed Odland tied a career high with three hits, but Santa Barbara City College scored early and often and defeated the Allan Hancock College baseball team 9-4 on Thursday in Santa Barbara. The two teams split their conference-opening two-game series. Hancock and SBCC have identical records of 1-1 in Western State Conference play and 10-9 overall.

The Vaqueros scored three times in the first inning, two in the second and four more in the third inning against Hancock starting pitcher Zach Torra. The freshman allowed nine runs overall, eight earned, in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out three, walked three and allowed nine hits.

Jake Shusterich threw 3 2/3 innings of shutout ball out of the bullpen. The freshman allowed three hits, walked one and struck out two. Jeff Fernandes pitched a shutout frame in the eighth inning for the Bulldogs.

Odland went 3-for-4, including a RBI-single in the second inning for Hancock's first run of the game. Second baseman Chad Jones added two hits, including a double. Sophomore shortstop Quinntin Perez waslked three times.

Trailing 9-1 after four, the Bulldogs scored once in the fifth on a run-scoring single from Cordell Bowie. Shusterich and Jacob Tonascia each drew walks with the bases loaded to collect RBIs and force in runs.

Santa Barbara finished with 13 hits. Reinhard Lautz went 3-for-5 with 3 RBI and three runs. John Jensen added two hits and an RBI.

Hancock returns home to host Oxnard at 2 p.m. on Friday at John Osborne Field.
