Shusterich and Harmonay Lead Bulldogs to 12-0 Win Over Ventura, Torra and Three Relievers Combine on Two-Hit Shutout

Jake Shusterich and Josh Harmonay had three hits and 3 RBI apiece to lead the Allan Hancock College baseball team to a 12-0 conference win on Saturday at John Osborne Field. Freshman Zach Torra struck out nine and combined with three relievers to hurl a two-hit shutout. The Bulldogs improved to 11-1 at home, 13-12 overall and 4-4 in Western State Conference play. Ventura dropped to 10-13 overall and 4-4 in league.

Shusterich put the Bulldogs on the board in the first inning with a solo homerun against Ventura pitcher Ryker Kennepohl, his team-leading fifth of the season. The freshman padded the Bulldogs' lead in the third inning with a two-run double to drive in Quinntin Perez and Shane Flaningam. Daniel Curiel hit a RBI-grounder to plate Chad Jones to make it 4-0 Bulldogs. Harmonay followed with a RBI-single to drive in Shusterich and make it a 5-0 game.

Hancock scored five times in the fifth as Cordell Bowie clubbed a run-scoring single, Harmonay delivered a two-run single and Perez hit a two-run double.

Hancock carried a 10-0 lead into the sixth when Brian Dowell and Brendan Gomez each drew a walk with the bases loaded to give Hancock a 12-0 lead.

The Bulldogs outhit the Pirates 10 to two. Shusterich went 3-for-3 with one walk, 3 RBI , two doubles, a homerun and scored four times. Harmonay went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI, two walks and scored once. Gomez, Bowie, Jones and Perez had one hit apiece. Perez drove in two runs with a double.

Torra improved to 3-1 on the season with five shutout innings. The left-handed pitcher struck out nine, walked two and allowed one hit. Jeff Fernandes struck out one and allowed one hit in two shutout innings. Phillip Martin and Matthew Hamon threw one shutout inning apiece.

The Bulldogs will host seven other teams during the annual Spring Baseball Tournament from Tuesday, March 27 through Thursday, March 29. Hancock plays East Los Angeles on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. before hosting Fresno on Wednesday at 1 p.m. and Cerritos at noon on Thursday.
