Hancock Football Sacks Santa Barbara City 48-14

Hancock faced a feisty Santa Barbara City College squad Saturday afternoon, but were able to still pull away with the victory, winning 48-14.

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Santa Maria, as Hancock College celebrated its 15-Annual Military Appreciation Day. But the Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros came in to ruin the day's festivities.

From opening kick, it was apparent the 1-6 Vaqueros came to play. They were able to hold the high-powered Bulldogs offense scoreless in the 1st quarter, including 2 interceptions.

The Bulldogs held strong themselves, leaving the end of the 1st quarter scoreless on both sides, 0-0.

At the start of the 2nd quarter, the Bulldogs defense was able to stop the Vaqueros 4th down attempt with a 15-yard loss on the run. This gave the Bulldogs running attack great field position. Running back tandem, Ryheem Skinner and Jayden Vargas were able to capitalize, switching off possessions with positive gains, and finished off with a 1-yard touchdown by Vargas.

Santa Barbara City responded quickly. After yet another interception, the Vaqueros completed an 11-yard pass for the touchdown, tying the score 7-7.

At 2nd down and 3, Vargas darted for a 19-yard gain. A 15-yard personal foul penalty by SBCC placed the ball at 49-yard line. That's when Skinner exploded downfield for a 34-yard touchdown. A failed attempt on the extra-point left the score 7-13 Bulldogs.

Both squads were unable to put any more points on the board before halftime, leaving the score 7-13 at the half.

At the start of the second half, the Bulldogs offense started to gain momentum. A drive for 75-yards, including four 1st downs, was highlighted by a 37-yard touchdown by sophomore running back Isaac Bausley. The Bulldogs extended the lead, 7-20.

The Bulldogs defense has been strong season and this game was no different. On the next possession, the Vaqueros were held to -4 yards, including a sack by Bulldogs Jacobi Kelly, forcing them to punt.

The Bulldogs running attack continued to abuse the Vaqueros defense, pushing the ball downfield 53-yards in 9 plays, ending in a 3-yard touchdown by Vargas.

Freshman LB Angelo Ortiz added to the lead when he intercepted a pass and returned the ball 44-yards for the touchdown, pushing the lead to 7-34 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

At the 11:30 mark of the 4th quarter, freshman quarterback Steven Schouten had an impressive drive, including a 25-yard completion to freshman FB Quintin Faison and 2-yard touchdown run of his own.

With score of 7-41, the game was all but over. But the Vaqueros kept fighting, and found themselves in the end zone once again after a 23-yard touchdown pass, closing the gap to 14-41.

However, the Bulldogs weren't done. With just over 3 minutes left in the game, freshman running Qualik Davis made the play of the game, darting down field for a 63-yard touchdown. The final score 14-48 Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs offense tallied 391 total yards, 347 of those on the ground. The Bulldogs defense held the Vaqueros to just 102 total yards, including 4 sacks and an interception.

The Bulldogs are on a 6-game winning streak and will travel to face off against L.A. Pierce next Saturday Nov. 3rd.
