Ten Hancock Football Players Named to Southern California Football Association's Scholar-Athlete Team

Ten Allan Hancock College football players earned spots on the 2018 Southern California Football Association (SCFA) Scholar-Athlete Team. The ten include kickers Logan Armstrong and Hector Gil-Garcia, running back Isaac Bausley, quarterback Thomas Carr, defensive backs Domanic Chapa and Tristin Durfee, wide receiver Spencer Pool, defensive end Seth Ollice, and offensive linemn Jacob Bouzard and RJ Grice. The ten student-athletes on this year's list represent the largest contingent of Bulldogs since 11 qualified for the 2012 SCFA Scholar-Athlete Team.

All ten were key players in 2018 for the Bulldogs, who finished 10-1 overall, won the Pacific League title and the American Championship Bowl Game. Hancock went unbeaten in conference play, winning back-to-back league titles for the first time in 57 years. To qualify, student-athletes had to meet three requirements: be an active member of a SCFA football team for two seasons; successfully complete a minimum of 36 units, 27 of which must have been in academic courses; and achieve a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average.

"This is a testament to the hard work of our coaching staff, academic counselor, and most importantly, demonstrates the dedication of our student-athletes," said Kim Ensing, Hancock's athletic director and associate dean. "We are a united front when it comes to emphasizing the importance of academics. We all love winning games, and we acknowledge hard work and discipline are characteristics that come from winning. However, their success in the classroom is paramount to them moving forward in life and beyond sports. Many of them already have or will soon see their hard work pay off with scholarships to four-year universities."

Bouzard, a Valley Christian Academy product, earned a perfect 4.0 GPA as an administration of justice major, while Grice posted a 3.12 GPA. Grice, an All-State and All-Conference First Team selection during the 2018 season, came to Hancock after graduating from Lompoc High School. The two offensive linemen contributed to the Hancock offense averaging a state-best 295.8 rushing yards per game, and 40.6 points per game, which ranked No. 8 in the state.

Ollice had a 3.40 GPA. The Righetti High School graduate recorded 43 total tackles, 9.5 for loss, including 3.5 sacks in 2018. The second team all-conference defensive lineman also forced one fumble and recovered two fumbles. Ollice has already signed a scholarship to play for Western State Colorado University, a Division II program.

A two-time all-conference selection, Bausley earned a spot on the Scholar-Athlete Team with a 3.15 GPA. The Nipomo High School graduate rushed for 323 yards and seven touchdowns as a sophomore and had a touchdown reception. In two seasons with Hancock, Bausley rushed for a total of 811 yards and 12 touchdowns.

A second-team all-conference defensive back, Chapa recorded 56 total tackles, including 3.5 for loss. He also recovered three fumbles and had one interception. During two seasons with the Bulldogs, Chapa compiled 97 total tackles and four interceptions. The Colorado native earned a 3.93 GPA.

Gil-Garcia, a first-generation college student, was an All-Conference Second Team selection after he converted three field goals and 52 extra points, accounting for 61 total points. Gil-Garcia, a Santa Maria High School graduate, earned a 3.38 GPA.

Carr posted a 3.10 GPA. The quarterback earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team Offense after completing 67 of his 112 passes for 1,101 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Atascadero High School graduate also rushed for 63 yards and another score. He threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns in Hancock's 38-35 win over San Bernardino in the American Championship Bowl.

Armstrong, an Atascadero High School graduate, earned a 3.25 GPA. He averaged 30.9 yards per punt and converted all three of his extra point attempts for Hancock in 2018.
Pool, a redshirt freshman, caught two passes for 23 yards on the gridiron. In the classroom, the Paso Robles native has earned a 3.40 GPA.

Durfee earned a 3.14 GPA. The Paso Robles High School graduate averaged 19.6 yards per kickoff return on special teams, while on defense, he registered seven tackles and broke up two passes.

Nine of the 10 scholar-athletes graduated from Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo county high schools.
