Bio

Kris Dutra enters his third season as the Associate Head Coach, and 22nd overall season, as a member of the Allan Hancock College football staff in 2023. Dutra previously served at the helm of the program for 19 seasons, leading the Bulldogs to win three consecutive conference championships and ten postseason bowl appearances.

With 119 career wins, he holds the record for most career coaching victories in program history. Over 19 seasons, his career coaching record is 119-81 with a .592 winning percentage and a 73-42 record (.635 winning percentage) in conference games. In addition to establishing a tradition of winning on the field, Dutra and his coaching staff continue to help student-athletes earn opportunities to play at four-year universities season after season.

During the 2018 campaign, Dutra enjoyed his finest year as head coach of the Bulldogs, leading Hancock to a 10-1 overall record, second straight outright Pacific League championship, and a victory in the American Championship Bowl. Dutra was named the Pacific League’s Coach of the Year, as well as the Region IV Coach of the Year by the California Community College Football Coaches Association (CCCFCA). Hancock went undefeated in conference play for the second year in a row and won back-to-back league titles for the first time in 57 years.

In 2017, Dutra guided the Bulldogs to an 8-3 overall record and their first outright conference title since 1997 and seventh in program history. The Bulldogs qualified for their first bowl game appearance in six seasons and eighth under Dutra. He was named the league's Coach of the Year and saw 16 of his players earn all-league recognition. Three Bulldogs received all-state recognition, and seven student-athletes earned spots on the 2017 Southern California Football Association's Scholar-Athlete Team. Seventeen players from the 2017 team signed scholarships with four-year universities. He earned his 100th win in the regular season finale, a 29-24 victory over Citrus to clinch the outright American Pacific League championship, and tie his mentor, Barney Eames, for most career wins in program history.

During the 2016 season, 11 Bulldogs received All-conference honors, including six First Team selections. Eight players from the 2015 team signed letters of intent to play at four-year institutions. Three of those athletes, defensive end Kevon Perry (Louisiana-Lafayette), running back Malik Williams (Louisville), and cornerback DaMarion King (Louisiana Tech) signed with Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I) programs.

Dutra also recruited All-American and current Carolina Panthers running back Cameron Artis-Payne to Hancock for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. After he broke every rushing record at Hancock, Artis-Payne transferred to Auburn. Artis-Payne was selected in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the NFC champion Carolina Panthers.

When the 2018 NFL season kicked off, four of Dutra's former players were on NFL rosters. The four included Artis-Payne with Carolina, defensive lineman Bryan Price with Dallas, cornerback Joshua Thornton with Houston, and Malik Williams with Atlanta.

Dutra began his career at Hancock leading the Bulldogs to a berth in the Cerritos Strawberry Bowl in 2001. Dutra took his 2003 squad to the top of the conference rankings with an 8-2 regular season record and an invitation to the prestigious Producer’s Dairy Bowl in Fresno. In 2004, he once again led his team to a berth in the Producer’s Bowl. In 2006 the Bulldogs earned an invitation to the American Bowl in Long Beach. With four bowl game appearances in his first five years at the helm of the Bulldogs, Dutra quickly earned his reputation as a coach with a well-respected, high-caliber competitive program.

In 2005, his squad broke or tied 11 team records, including records for the most points in a season (454), most points in a game (81), most yards rushing in a game (522), and most yards rushing in a season (3,674). The 2008 squad broke the 2005 record for most total offense in a game with 683 yards against Glendale College.

As a star quarterback at Santa Maria High School, Dutra played for Eavmes. After graduation, he moved to Moorpark College, where he played two seasons before transferring to Culver-Stockton College in Missouri. After graduating, Dutra remained at Culver-Stockton for two more years, coaching the program’s quarterbacks and receivers. Returning to Santa Maria, he joined the staff at Hancock under Eames, starting as the quarterbacks coach and then as the offensive coordinator. Named interim head coach, Dutra guided the Bulldogs to a 7-3 regular season record in 2001. He was named permanent head coach and physical education instructor in 2002.
