Hancock Starts Boys Basketball Fall League, Registration Under Way for Middle and High School Teams

Allan Hancock College men's basketball head coach Tyson Aye has announced plans to start a boy's basketball fall league next month. The Hancock Youth Basketball Club league will feature separate divisions for sixth, seventh and eighth grade boys, as well as divisions for freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams.

"There is a demand for this," said Aye. "Since we started the Hancock Youth Basketball Club in the spring coaches and parents have been asking us to do more and this is the next logical step of connecting the community and the Hancock basketball program."

Teams will be developed on their own. The college will run the league and host the games that will played on Sundays from August 24 through October 12.

"Athletes from the Santa Maria Valley will no longer have to travel out of the area to be part of a competitive fall league. We want Hancock and Joe White Memorial Gymnasium to be the youth basketball hub of the Santa Maria Valley and beyond."

The season will include eight games, as well as a championship and awards. The fee to register a team is $400 before August 18, or $425 after the initial deadline. If an organization is registering more than one team, the fee for the additional squads will be $380 apiece.

Each division must have a minimum of four teams or it will be cancelled. If a division is cancelled, registered teams will have the option of a full refund or entry to a higher division.

Games will feature two 20-minute halves with a running clock. The timer will stop during time outs and the last two minutes of the second half.

The Hancock Youth Basketball Club started in the spring with nearly 100 children participating in coaching clinics with Hancock coaches and players. Additional clinics have taken place during the summer. Coaching sessions are scheduled for August 4-7, and August 11-14. The fee is $95 per session and child. Instruction from players and coaches will take place from 9 a.m. to noon in the Joe White Memorial Gymnasium.
