Bulldogs Knock Off No.11 Cuesta in WSC Battle Behind Career-Night from Willkomm

Matt Willkomm buried four three-pointers on his way to career-high 25 points to lead the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team to an 83-69 conference win at rival Cuesta College on Saturday night. The Bulldogs improved to 2-0 in Western State Conference action and 7-9 overall.  Cuesta, the 11th ranked team in the latest Southern California Regional poll, dropped to 1-1 in conference and 11-7 overall.

Willkomm, a freshman guard and Arroyo Grande High School graduate, hit nine of his 19 shots, including four of 12 from three-point territory. He added two rebounds, two assists, and two steals. 

 

Shamel Williams added 18 points on five of eight shooting from the floor, and eight of 13 from the free throw line. He added five rebounds. Lawrence Johnson added 13 points, six rebounds and three assists. Sophomore guard Kadeem Minor finished with 17 points and four rebounds. He was perfect from the floor and finished six for six, including three for three from long range, to go with a two for two performance at the free throw line. Andre Miller added six points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

The Bulldogs led 37-30 at halftime after hitting 12 of their 26 shots from the floor, and nine of 10 from the free throw line. Hancock outscored the Cougars 46-39 in the second half thanks to a 15 for 23 (65 percent) shooting effort in the final 20 minutes. Overall, Hancock shot 55 percent (27 for 49) and 45 percent from three-point range (10 for 22). The Bulldogs made 19 of 26 from the free throw line for a 73 percent clip. 

Hancock outrebounded Cuesta 29-28.

Benat Hevia led the Cougars with 16 points, while Keshawn Liggins added 10 points. 

Cuesta shot 43 percent (26 for 60) from the floor and 35 percent from three-point range (7 for 20). The Cougars were 10 for 16 from the free throw line.

The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 5 p.m. when they host Ventura (0-1, 7-10).
