Hancock Men Win Home Opener 70-56 Over William Jessup University's Junior Varsity Team

Marcellus Garrick scored a game-high 16 points, while Malik Rhodes added 11 and Matt Willkomm added 10 to lead the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team to a 70-56 win in its home opener against the junior varsity team from William Jessup University on Saturday afternoon in Joe White Memorial Gymnasium. The Bulldogs evened their record at 2-2, while William Jessup dropped to 0-4. The NAIA-level program is based in Rocklin, California.

Hancock trailed 4-0 early, but took the lead for good on a three-point bucket from Willkom. The Arroyo Grande High School graduate scored all 10 of his points in the first half. The sophomore guard added five rebounds and made four of his nine shots overall.

Garrick had nine points at halftime, before finishing with a career-high 16. He made five of his 10 shots from the floor, including three of five from three-point range. He pulled down six rebounds, including four offensive boards. Rhodes scored all 11 of his points in the second half to go with three assists and two steals.

Freshmen guards Shane Carney and Manny Mangayao set career highs with  eight points apiece. Mangayao, an Orcutt Academy graduate, made three of his 11 shots to go with two rebounds.

Tim Ford led the Bulldogs with nine rebounds, while center Jeremy Eves had six points and two boards.

Hancock shot 37 percent from the floor overall by making 24 of its 65 shots, including 10 of 22 from three-point range. The Bulldogs sank 12 of their 22 free throws or 54.5 percent. The Bulldogs finished with 42 rebounds, including 16 on the offensive glass. William Jessup finished with 24 rebounds and shot 41 percent from the field (19 for 46).

The Bulldogs will host the inaugural Home Motors Invitational from Friday, Nov. 20, through Sunday, Nov. 22. The Bulldogs open against Napa on Friday at 7 p.m. inside Joe White Memorial Gymnasium.
