Hancock Falls 79-69 to No. 6 Yuba Despite 23 From Rhodes and 20 From Carney

Despite 23 points from Malik Rhodes and 18 from Shane Carney, both freshman guards, the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team fell 79-69 to Yuba, the sixth ranked team in the state preseason poll, during day two of the inaugural Home Motors Invitational on Saturday evening in Joe White Memorial Gymnasium. Hancock's overall record dropped to 3-3, while Yuba improved to 2-3.

Hancock shot 39 percent compared to Yuba's 46 percent in the first half and trailed 43-30 at intermission. Yuba hit seven of its 11 shots from three-point range in the first 20 minutes.

The Bulldogs fell behind 71-48 with less than seven minutes to play before closing out the game on a 21-8 run to narrow the deficit. 

Carney made seven of 12 shots from the floor and all five of his free throws to set a career high for points to go with three rebounds and two assists. Rhodes was seven for 19 from the field and seven for eight from the free-throw line. Sophomore Matt Willkomm finished 13 points on five for 18 shooting, including three for 12 from long-range.

Hancock finished the game 23 for 72 from the field for 31 percent, and sank seven of 29 from three-point range. The Bulldogs made 16 of 18 from the free-throw line.

Yuba made 23 of 54 from the field or 43 percent of its shots and sank 24 of 28 from the free throw line.

Five 49ers reached double-digits led by Joesef Zamora who had 18 and Jalen Davis who finished with 13 points.

The Bulldogs will look to rebound as they close out the tournament on Sunday against Marin at 4 p.m.

Marin, the eighth ranked team in the preseason state poll, fell 68-58 in overtime to San Diego City College on Saturday afternoon. The Mariners, who beat Cuesta on Friday, are 4-4 overall. George Johnson led Marin with 14 points, while Taylor Nelson was the Knights' leading scorer with a game-high 29 points behind four three-pointers.

San Diego (4-2) will play Napa at 2 p.m. on Sunday, which will follow the Cuesta contest against Yuba slated to begin at noon.
