WIllkomm's Game-Winner Lifts Hancock To 62-60 Upset Over No. 8 Marin

A three-point basket from Matt Willkomm as the shot clock expired with three seconds left in the game lifted the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team to a thrilling 62-60 upset win over Marin to close out the inaugural Home Motors Invitational on Sunday evening in Joe White Memorial Gymnasium.  The Bulldogs improved to 4-3 overall after a 2-1 mark over the weekend. Marin, the eighth ranked team in the state preseason poll, dropped to 4-5.

The Bulldogs and Mariners were tied 59-59 with 5.2 seconds on the game clock and two seconds on the shot clock. Hancock in-bounded the ball from underneath the basket to Willkomm on the wing who took a shot as the shot clock expired and as he fell to the ground only to watch it hit the bottom of the net. The Bulldogs put Marin on the free throw line and George Johnson hit the first, and intentionally missed the second but Marin could not get another shot off in time. Willkomm's shot was his only bucket of the second half as the sophomore guard finished with eight points on two for 11 shooting. Malik Rhodes led the Bulldogs with 15 points, four assists and three steals. Jeremiah Headley knocked down four three-pointers on six shots to add 12 points and four rebounds. Shane Carney had seven points, all in the first half, to go with four assists.

Headley hit a three-pointer with 2:43 to go in the first half to give Hancock a 36-27 advantage. Headley had six points in the first half as Hancock led 40-33 at intermission. However, the Mariners started the second half on a 10-0 run to take a three-point lead. Headley drained his third triple of the game to tie the game with 16:12 to go in the game, and the two teams went back and forth the rest of the way.

The Bulldogs shot 37 percent from the field for the game by making 18 of its 48 shots. The Bulldogs made 36 percent of their 22 three-point shots as Headley hit four and Willkomm drained two. The Bulldogs sank 18 of their 24 free throw shots or 75 percent.

Marcellus Garrick and Isaac Willkomm, Matt Willkomm's brother, added five points apiece for Hancock.

Marin shot 39 percent overall on 20 for 53 shooting. Noah Everly led the Mariners with a game-high 22 points.

Earlier in the day, Karem Ozel drained a three-pointer to give Cuesta a thrilling 71-69 win over Yuba, the sixth ranked team in the preseason state poll. Ozel led the Cougars with 15 points, while Manny Malou led the 49ers with 20. Cuesta finished the tournament 2-1 and improved to 4-2 overall. Yuba dropped to 2-4 on the season after a 1-2 mark at the Home Motors Invitational.

San Diego City College completed a perfect weekend with an 80-56 victory over Napa Valley College. Leonard Allen led San Diego with 18 points, while Taylor Nelson added 14.  San Diego left Santa Maria 5-2 overall, while Napa dropped to 0-5 after an 0-3 performance this weekend.

The Bulldogs will return to action Wednesday, Nov. 25, at El Camino. The game will begin at 5 p.m. El Camino is 1-5 and coming off a 105-70 loss to Fresno, the No. 5 team in the state.
