Four Bulldogs Reach Double Figures in Come-From-Behind 74-69 Win over Yuba to Advance to Modesto Semifinals

Shane Carney scored 17 points to lead a quartet of Bulldogs with 13 or more points during the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team's come-from-behind 74-69 win over Yuba in the championship quarterfinals of the Modesto Tournament on Thursday evening.

The Bulldogs improved to 7-5 overall, while Yuba dropped to 6-7.  Hancock also avenged last month's 10-point loss in Santa Maria during the inaugural Home Motors Invitational.

Carney, a freshman guard, scored 12 of his team-high 17 points in the first half for the Bulldogs. He led the Bulldogs with 16 points in the team's tournament opener on Tuesday.

Marcellus Garrick scored eight points in the first half to help the Bulldogs carry a 41-33 lead into intermission. The freshman finished with 13 points.

Hancock fell behind by four points with about four minutes remaining in the game, but the Bulldogs battled back to regain the lead for good. Sophomore guard Matt Willkomm, an Arroyo Grande High School graduate, hit a tough shot in the lane with about one minute to go to put the Bulldogs ahead by three. Malik Rhodes sank two free throws with 2.3 seconds remaining to put the game on ice.

Rhodes scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half. He reached double digits in scoring for the 11th time this season.

Willkomm sank four three-pointers on the night to finish with 14 points.

Jeremiah Headley also hit two three-pointers to finish eight points, all in the first half for Hancock.

Emmanuel Malou led Yuba with 23 points, while JoJo Zamora added 17 points for the 49ers.

Hancock will face Fresno City College, the 14th ranked team in the state, in the championship semifinals on Friday at 6 p.m. Fresno defeated No. 9 Chabot 87-82 in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Fresno City, which is also ranked seventh in the North Region Poll, improved to 9-5, while Chabot fell to 9-3.  BJ Shelton led the Rams with 24 points and eight rebounds. Will Dorsey added 15 points for Fresno.

The winner between Hancock and Fresno will advance to Saturday's championship game of the 78th annual Modesto Junior College Basketball Tournament. The title game will begin at 7 p.m. The third place game will be at 5 p.m.
