Hancock Travels to Oxnard Wednesday, Hosts Moorpark Saturday

The men's basketball team will look to continue its winning ways with two Western State Conference games this week. The Bulldogs start the week 3-4 in conference and 11-13 overall.  Hancock sits in fourth place in the standings, while Oxnard at 2-5 and 8-11 is in sixth place. Moorpark and Ventura (5-2) are one game behind first place Cuesta (6-1). The Bulldogs will play at Oxnard on Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. before hosting Moorpark on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 5 p.m.

Hancock opened the second half of conference with an 84-72 win at Santa Barbara City College last week. Sophomore guard Matt Willkomm (Arroyo Grande HS) tied a season high with 24 points and Tim Ford added a career-best 17 points in the victory. Five Bulldogs scored in double digits to help Hancock snap a three-game losing skid. Shane Carney and Malik Rhodes added 12 points apiece, and Marcellus Garrick finished with 10 points.

Hancock fell 95-86 to Oxnard last month at home. Rhodes led the Bulldogs with 30 points in the loss. Carney finished with 19 points, six rebounds and three assists. Willkomm had 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Garrick finished with 10 points. Ford had six points and 13 rebounds for the Bulldogs. Terrance Nunnery led the Falcons with 26 points, while sophomore DeSean Scott (Arroyo Grande HS) added 15 points and MacDaniel DeJoya finished with 19. Scott ranks 13th in the state at 19.3 points per game.

Hancock's Rhodes leads the Bulldogs at 16.8 points per game, while Willkomm averages 14.5 per contest.

Saturday, Hancock will welcome Moorpark, which starts the week at 16-7 overall and 5-2 in league. The Raiders will play at Ventura on Wednesday in a battle of second place teams. Hancock overcame a two-point halftime deficit last month to knock off then-No. 15 Moorpark on the road 81-70. Willkomm sank seven three-point shots in the win to lead the Bulldogs with 24 points. Carney added 19 points and eight assists, and Rhodes finished with 18 points for the Bulldogs.

Larry Bush is the Raiders' top scorer at 15.9 points per game. Jeremiah Gray averages 13.4 and Joshua Brooks averages 13.3 points per game for Moorpark. The Raiders have five players averaging 11.2 points or more per game.
