Hancock Men End Season with Overtime Loss at Cuesta, Willkomm Breaks 22-Year-Old School Record

Despite seven three-point baskets and 27 points from sophomore star Matt Willkomm, the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team ended the season with a heartbreaking 89-84 loss in overtime at Cuesta College on Wednesday.

Hancock finished the 2015-16 season 4-8 in Western State Conference play and 12-17 overall. Cuesta entered a three-way tie for first place with one game to play. The Cougars, Moorpark and Ventura are 8-3 in conference with Cuesta set to play at Moorpark and Ventura to travel to Oxnard on Saturday in the regular season finale.

WIllkomm entered the game tied with Tyrone Garris for the most threes in a single-season in program history. The Arroyo Grande High School graduate finished with seven triples to break the school's 22-year-old record with 90 three-point buckets. He also finished his career as the all-time leader with 150 career threes.

He scored 14 points in the first half to help the Bulldogs enter halftime tied at 39-39. Hancock led 75-73 and had the ball with less than 30 seconds to play in regulation when the Bulldogs missed a shot down low with seconds left. Cuesta picked up the rebound and took it down court and Evgeniy Moiseev drew a shooting foul with 1.3 seconds to play. Moiseev hit both free throws to send the game to overtime.

Willkomm fouled out of the game a few minutes into overtime and the Bulldogs hit just five of their nine free throws in the extra period. The Cougars outscored Hancock 14-9 in overtime to stay in the conference title hunt.

After being held scoreless in the first half, Malik Rhodes scored 11 points in the second half and five in overtime to finish with 16 points. He sank four of seven free throws in the game.

Marcellus Garrick poured in 15 points and Tim Ford added eight. Collins Uzowulu finished with seven points for the Bulldogs.

Benat Hevia sank seven three-point buckets to lead the Cougars with 27 points.
