Bulldogs Drop Heartbreaker 60-59 to SBCC

Robert Hutchins hit two free throws with 3.1 seconds to give Santa Barbara City College a 60-59 victory over the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team Saturday inside Joe White Memorial Gymnasium. The Bulldogs fell to 0-3 in Western State Conference play and 10-13 overall. SBCC snapped a 13-game losing streak to improve to 1-2 in league and 3-16 on the year.
Marcellus Garrick led the Bulldogs with 15 points. The sophomore hit 6-of-13 from the field, including three 3-pointers, to go with five rebounds. Nolan Willett added 14 points, six assists, and three steals. Kevawn Lord came off the bench to record his third double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Lord went 6-for-11 from the field and hit both of his free throws. Marc Fabricius added seven points and seven rebounds.

Overall, Hancock shot 45 percent from the field on a 23-for-51 effort. The Bulldogs made 7-of-20 from 3-point range, and hit just six of their 12 free throws. Hancock dominated the boards and held a 40-22 edge.

SBCC shot 40.7 percent on the day, and forced Hancock into 26 turnovers that led to 30 Vaquero points.

Tyler Crandall scored the last six points of the first half to give the Vaqueros a 39-33 lead at halftime. Crandall scored all 16 of his points in the first half. The Bulldogs trailed 56-48 with less than four minutes to play in the game when they stormed back. Garrick buried a 3-pointer to tie the game 56-56 with 1:44 to go. Lord gave Hancock its first lead since the first quarter with a layup that put the Bulldogs ahead 59-58 with 22 seconds remaining. SBCC regained possession and eventually took the lead for good with two free throws from Hutchins, who finished with a game-high 20 points.

Hancock will return to action Wednesday at Cuesta College at 5 p.m. The Cougars are 3-0 in conference and 10-11 overall.
