Despite Career High from Garrick, Hancock Men Fall 73-67 to Moorpark on Carney's Coaches vs. Cancer Night

Marcellus Garrick hit four 3-pointers to score a career-high 26 points, including 19 in the second half, but the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team fell 73-67 at home to Moorpark on Wednesday evening. Hancock dropped to 2-5 in Western State Conference play and 12-15 overall. The Raiders improved to 2-5 in league and 8-14 overall. The college hosted its annual Carney's Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser event to help find a cure for cancer and support local residents battling the disease.

Garrick went 9-for-17 from the field and 4-for-9 from 3-point range. The sophomore hit all four of his free throws to finish with 26 points. Garrick added seven rebounds.

After the Bulldogs trailed nearly the entire second half, Garrick hit a 3-pointer to give Hancock a 65-63 lead with 2:15 to play. However, Moorpark went on an 10-0 run to take an eight-point lead with less than 10 seconds remaining.

Kevawn Lord added 15 points and four rebounds. The sophomore went 6-for-13 from the floor. He hit 1-of-2 from 3-point range. Deon Whiteside added nine points and six rebounds, while Erik Kinnebrew finished with five points, 10 rebounds and six assists for the Bulldogs.

Overall, Hancock shot 39 percent from the field, and hit 6-of-23 from 3-point range or 26 percent. The Bulldogs hit 79 percent of their free throws. Hancock held the rebounding edge 38-27.

Lord scored nine points and Garrick had seven in the first 20 minutes as the Bulldogs trailed 34-32 at halftime. The Bulldogs shot 37 percent in the first half compared to Moorpark at 42 percent.

During intermission, the college presented a check for $2,500 to the Mission Hope Cancer Center, which provides programs and services to local residents battling cancer. Hancock faculty, staff, administrators, and community members donated to the cause this week. The college also launched a campaign on social media at crowdfunding.hancockcollege.edu to collect donations online. All ticket, commemorative t-shirt and snack bar sales from Wednesday's game will also be donated to Mission Hope.

Overall, three Raiders scored 12 or more points led by Luis Herrera, who finished with 22 points. He went 6-for-10 from 3-point range and 7-for-11 overall. Elijah Holts added 19 points, while Damian Wilson recorded a triple-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists.

The Bulldogs will look to get back on track Saturday, February 11, at Santa Barbara City College. Tip off will be at 5 p.m.
