Career High from Lord Leads Balanced Hancock Attack, Men's Basketball Ends Season with 98-95 Win at Oxnard

Sophomore Kevawn Lord scored a career-high 35 points, including the final three points of the game, to carry the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team to a season-ending 98-95 win at Oxnard Saturday afternoon.  The Bulldogs swept the season series from the Condors to finish the year 4-6 in Western State Conference play and 14-16 overall. Oxnard ended the campaign 4-6 in league and 6-17 on the year.

Hancock held a three-point lead in the final 20 seconds when Oxnard hit a 3-pointer to tie it 95-95 with less than 15 seconds to go. The Bulldogs inbounded the ball, and Lord was fouled and sent to the line with 11.3 seconds to play. The sophomore hit one of two to give Hancock a 96-95 lead. Oxnard brought the ball up court, but threw it away and the Bulldogs regained possession. After a timeout, Garrick inbounded the ball from under Oxnard's basket and threw it the length of the court to Lord who caught it in stride and scored a layup with a Condor right behind him to give the Bulldogs a 98-95 lead with less than five seconds remaining. Oxnard missed a potentially game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Lord scored 14 points in the first half, and sophomore Marcellus Garrick added 10 as the Bulldogs trailed 45-43 at intermission. Freshman guard Nolan Willett and sophomore Deon Whiteside had six points each in the first 20 minutes.

The Bulldogs erupted for 55 points in the second half thanks to 21 from Lord, and 10 each from Whiteside and Willett.

The Bulldogs earned the victory behind an all-around team effort. Lord led all scorers with 35 points and eight rebounds. Willett finished with 16 points and six assists. Whiteside added 16 points and six rebounds. Garrick chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds, while Erik Kinnebrew just missed a triple-double with nine points, 15 rebounds and nine assists.

Hancock hit five 3-pointers on the day, all of which came in the first half. Hancock made 25 of 36 shots from the free-throw line, or 69 percent. Garrick went 7-for-8 from the line, and Lord went 10-for-13.

Sophomore Dominic Jackson added eight points for Hancock. The contest marked the final game in the Hancock careers for five sophomores: Jackson, Lord, Garrick, Whiteside and guard Shane Carney, who missed the final 21 games of the year due to an injury.

Dayshone Henry led the Condors with 23 points.
