Former Hancock Basketball Star Matt Willkomm Receives National Academic Honor at Arizona Christian

Former Allan Hancock College men's basketball star Matt Willkomm received a national honor for his performance as a student-athlete this past season at Arizona Christian University. Willkomm, who recently completed his junior season for the Firestorm, was named by to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honor Court. To be eligible, student-athletes needed to be a junior or senior, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher, compete at the NCAA or NAIA level, and have attended the institution for at least one year.

The business major played in all 30 of the Firestorm's games during the 2016-17 season. The guard averaged 10.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. The Arroyo Grande High School graduate shot 31 percent from 3-point range. Willkomm played at Hancock from 2014-16. A two-time All-Conference First Team selection with the Bulldogs, Willkomm finished his Hancock career as the all-time leader in most 3-pointers made in a single-season (90) and most career 3-pointers made (150).

The Arizona Christian men's basketball team also received the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award. ACU was the only team from the Golden State Athletic Conference to receive the honor. To qualify, teams needed to earn a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or higher.

Willkomm is one of 19 former Hancock basketball players to continue playing at four-year institutions since Tyson Aye became head coach of the Bulldogs in 2013.
