Hancock Men's Basketball Falls to Orange Coast to Open L.A. Southwest Classic

Shane Carney and Spirit Ricks scored 11 points each, but the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team fell 78-57 to Orange Coast in the first round of the L.A. Southwest Classic on Thursday. Hancock dropped its second straight to fall to 6-5. Orange Coast moved to 6-5.

A bucket by Trenton Mitchell gave Hancock a 4-2 lead with 18:36 to play. The Pirates went on a 22-6 run over the next nine minutes to take control of the game by the score of 24-10. Orange Coast carried a 42-24 advantage into intermission. The Bulldogs were charged with 17 turnovers in the first half, compared to one for the Pirates.

The Bulldogs committed 30 turnovers in the game that led to 31 points by the Pirates. Orange Coast committed 11 turnovers in the game that Hancock turned into nine points. Orange Coast also dominated the paint, outscoring Hancock 42-20 in the paint.

Hancock hit 19 of its 43 shots overall from the floor or 44 percent. The Bulldogs made 14 of their 24 free throws for a 58 percent mark. The Pirates shot 49 percent from the field and 69 percent from the free-throw line.

Carney hit four of his eight shots from the field, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range. The sophomore added six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Ricks went 3-for-5 from the field and 5-for-8 from the free-throw line. He finished with six rebounds on top of his 11 points.

Freshman guard Diego Lucas scored a career-high nine points by hitting 3-of-5 from 3-point territory. Devin Davis added seven points and five rebounds.

Three Pirates scored 14 or more points. Malik Skillern led Orange Coast with 15 points, while Kupaa Harrison and Lloyd Wright added 14 apiece.

The Bulldogs will face Oxnard at 1 p.m. on Friday The Condors fell to 0-6 after losing 89-85 to Rio Hondo in the first round on Thursday.
