Jordan Fuels Comeback, Hancock Wins Consolation Championship 65-62 at LA Southwest Tournament

Freshman Glenn Jordan scored a career-high 19 points, and Shane Carney added 13 to lead the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team to a 65-62 come-from-behind win over L.A. Valley in the consolation championship Saturday at the L.A. Southwest Tournament. After taking two of three at the tournament, Hancock improved to 8-5. The Monarchs fell to 3-9.

The Bulldogs trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, but entered halftime down 36-32. Carney and John Riddick had eight points apiece for Hancock in the first 20 minutes, and Jordan had seven points. Hancock shot 30 percent in the first half, while the Monarchs made 45 percent of their shots.

Jordan and the Bulldogs came to life after two Monarch free throws pushed L.A. Valley's lead to 46-39 with 15:54 remaining in the game. However, a 13-4 run by the Bulldogs over the next five minutes gave Hancock its first lead since the first half at 52-50 with 10:38 to play. Jordan has six points in that span, including the go-ahead layup. Valley eventually tied it 58-58 with a pair of free throw with three minutes to play, but Jordan gave Hancock the lead for good at 61-58 with a clutch 3-pointer on the ensuing possession. Spirit Ricks and Jordan sealed the win with a pair of free throws apiece.

Jordan hit 6-of-13 shots overall from the floor, including three of his four shots from 3-point range and free-throw line to finish with 19 points. The freshman from Washington also had four rebounds, two steals and two assists. Carney hit 2-of-9 from 3-point range and 4-of-13 overall to finish with 13 points and six assists.

Trenton Mitchell finished with nine points and seven rebounds. Devin Davis chipped in eight points and five rebounds, while Riddick finished with eight points and six rebounds, including four offensive boards.

Ricks earned a spot on the all-tournament team. He finished with four points and eight rebounds against LA. Valley. The freshman averaged 10.6 points and 8.6 rebounds during the tournament. He recorded his third double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds in Friday's win against Oxnard.

Overall, Hancock shot 34 percent from the field, compared to 41 percent for the Monarchs. Hancock shot 82 percent from the free-throw line by sinking 19 of 23 foul shots. Hancock also held a 41-39 edge in rebounds and 11-4 advantage in second-chance points.

The Bulldogs will enjoy a break for the holiday season. They return to action Thursday, Dec. 28 when they open the Allan Hancock College Holiday Classic at 5 p.m. against Chabot.
