Bulldogs Dominate Second Half to Earn Come-From-Behind Win Over Moorpark 73-61, Davis and Mitchell Record Doubles

The Allan Hancock College men's basketball team scored the first 17 points of the second half to erase a six-point halftime deficit and went on to defeat Moorpark 73-61 Wednesday evening inside Joe White Memorial Gymnasium. Sophomore Devin Davis recorded his third straight double-double, while Trenton Mitchell earned his second to lead the comeback. The Bulldogs won their fourth straight game to finish the first round of Western State Conference play at 4-1 in league and 17-8 overall. The Raiders fell to 2-3 in league and 9-13 overall.

Hancock struggled offensively in the first half and shot 28 percent in the first half. Despite eight points and seven rebounds in the first half from Mitchell, the Bulldogs trailed the Raiders 29-23 at intermission.

Hancock came out of the locker room with more energy, intensity and the shots began to fall. The Bulldogs scored the first 17 points of the first half, and outscored the Raiders 24-3 in the first 10 minutes to take control of the game. A layup from Spirit Ricks gave Hancock its largest lead of the game at 54-37 with less than eight minutes to play. The Raiders closed to within six points, but Hancock hit its free throws to clinch the come-from-behind win.

Davis led the Bulldogs with 15 points, 13 rebounds and four assists. He pulled down four offensive rebounds to record his seventh double-double of the season. The sophomore scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half to help fuel the comeback. Mitchell came off the bench to finish with 12 points and 15 rebounds, seven of which came off the offensive glass. Sophomore Shane Carney scored all 13 of his points in the second half, fueled by an 8-for-8 performance from the free-throw line.

Spirit Ricks finished with 11 points and nine rebounds. Ricks tallied nine points and six boards in the second half.

Hancock shot 45 percent in the second half and outscored the Raiders 50-32.

Overall, Hancock made 22 of its 61 shots or 36 percent. The Bulldogs went 3-for-18 from 3-point range, and drained 26-of-35 from the free-throw line or 74 percent. Moorpark shot 38 percent from the field and hit only 10 of its 21 free throws.

The Bulldogs outrebounded Moorpark 55-27. Hancock pulled down 20 offensive rebounds, compared to six by the Raiders.

Hancock hosts first-place Ventura on Saturday, February 3 at 5 p.m. The Pirates, ranked No. 17 in the state this week, defeated the Hancock men in Ventura 77-67 in both teams' conference openers in early JAnuary. Ventura won 93-82 at Cuesta Wednesday evening to improve to 5-0 in league.

Hancock will host Carney's Coaches vs. Cancer on Saturday to help find a cure and raise awareness about cancer. All ticket, t-shirt and snack bar sales will be donated to Marian Regional Medical Center's Mission Hope Cancer Center that provides support programs and services to local patients battling the disease and their families.
