Carney Sets 3-Point Record, Hancock Routs Oxnard 96-66 to Improve Playoff Resume

Allan Hancock College sophomore Shane Carney hit five 3-pointers to break a school record and lead six Bulldogs in double-digits as the men's basketball team ended the season with a 96-66 home victory over Oxnard on Saturday evening. The No. 16 Bulldogs finished the regular season 8-2 in Western State Conference play and 21-9 overall. The 21 wins are the most by the program in a single-season in 17 years. Hancock finished second in the conference, its best finish since tying for the conference crown in 2014-15. The Ventura men defeated Santa Barbara to wrap up their third straight conference title.

An early 11-0 run in the first half allowed the Bulldogs to take control of the game and never look back. Carney buried four from beyond-the-arc in the first for 16 points and Mayowa Akinsanya scored sevn points to help the Bulldogs carry a 51-31 lead into intermission. Hancock shot 52.6 percent in the first half and pulled down 12 offensive rebounds. Oxnard shot 38 percent in the first 20 minutes.

Overall, Carney finished 8-for-14 from the field and 5-for-11 from 3-point range to rack up 21 points. The sophomore also dished out seven assists. Carney upped his season total to 92 3-pointers made, breaking the program single-season of 90 set by Matt Willkomm in 2015-16. Carney has 151 career 3-point buckets made, which is tied with Willkomm for most in a Hancock player's career.

Freshman Spirit Ricks was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line to finish with 17 points and five rebounds. Akinsanya finished with 11 points and nine rebounds, including five on the offensive end. Glenn Jordan, Kevin Baines and John Riddick contributed 10 points each. Jordan added seven assists.

Freshman forward Trenton Mitchell pulled down a team-high 15 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards, to go with eight points. Devin Davis also scored eight points to go with eight rebounds.

Hancock went 38-for-70 from the field (54 percent), 8-for-22 from 3-point range (36 percent), and 12-for-21 (57 percent) from the line. The Bulldogs finished with 56 rebounds, 22 on the offensive end, and 28 assists.

The Condors shot 40 percent overall. Al Stubbs led Oxnard with 21 points and Jakari McClain added 19.

Hancock will learn its postseason fate on Monday when the regional brackets and seeds are released. The last time Hancock earned a postseason bid was in the 2013-14 seasons. The Bulldogs will be looking to earn their first postseason win since 2001.
