Hancock Men's Basketball Upsets Fullerton 70-67 in Overtime Thriller to Advance to Regional Finals

Devin Davis scored a game-high 24 points, while Shane Carney and Glenn Jordan added 15 apiece to lead the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team to a thrilling 70-67 overtime win at Fullerton on Friday in the second round of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern Regional. The Bulldogs clawed their way to the program's first postseason win since 2001 to improve to 22-9 overall and advanced to the regional finals. Hancock will either play at No. 2 San Bernardino Valley (26-4) or host No. 18 Antelope Valley College next Saturday. SBVC hosts AVC on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. AVC defeated Cuesta in Wednesday's first round 64-58.

Davis scored 12 points in the first half to help the Bulldogs keep pace with the Hornets. Despite shooting 38 percent in the first 20 minutes, Hancock trailed 29-27 at the break.

After Fullerton started the second half on a 8-3 run to build a 37-30 lead, Hancock found its groove on both ends of the court. Buckets by Davis and a 3-pointer from the corner by Shemarr Parker fueled an 11-0 run by the Bulldogs to give Hancock its first lead since early in the game. Carney hit back-to-back 3-pointers for the Bulldogs and Glenn Jordan added a third to help Hancock build a 53-46 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining. Hancock led by as many as eight points, 56-48 with 7:19 to play, after another Jordan triple before Fullerton went on a run of its own and carried a 60-58 lead into the final minute. Davis got the rebound and putback off his own miss to tie it at 60 with less than 30 seconds in regulation. With the game tied 60-60, Fullerton had the ball coming out of a timeout. The Hornets missed two potential game-winning shots to send it to overtime.

Fullerton scored the first bucket of the five-minute overtime, but Hancock went on a 5-0 run behind a 3-pointer from Carney and a layup off a steal by Jordan to take a 65-62 lead with 3:13 to play. Fullerton hit two free throws to climb to within one, but Davis hit a jumper to push the lead back to three at 67-64. Jordan hit two free throws and Diego Lucas added one of two to keep the Bulldogs ahead. Fullerton missed a desperation 3-point shot at the buzzer to seal the win.

Davis finished the game 12-for-18 from the field with 24 points and eight rebounds. Carney went 5-for-22 from the floor, 3-or-11 from 3-point range and 2-for-3 from the line to end with 15 points. He upped his program single-season record to 95 3-pointers made this season and broke the school record for most career 3-pointers with 153. The sophomore guard added three assists and two steals.

Jordan hit 3-of-6 from 3-point range and 5-for-11 overall to finish with 15 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Bulldogs. Parker finished with six points and five rebounds, while freshman Trenton Mitchell added eight boards and five points.

Overall, Hancock went 27-for-72 from the field for a 37 percent mark. The Bulldogs shot 30 percent from 3-point range by hitting 7-of-23. The Bulldogs shot 53 percent from the line and sank just 9-of-17.

The Bulldogs forced 17 Fullerton turnovers that led to 20 points. Hancock committed just eight turnovers that led to five Hornet points. Fullerton led the rebounding category 40-to-37 despite 18 offensive rebounds by the Bulldogs.

All-conference forward Spirit Ricks managed two points and two rebounds before leaving the game with an injury in the first half.

Fullerton shot 49 percent from the field and hit 12-of-20 from the free-throw line. Jason Richardson led the Hornets with 24 points and nine rebounds. Ronne Readus recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out of the game.

The final four teams in the South Region and the final four teams in the North Region will advance to the State Finals.
