Hancock Men's Basketball Advances to State Championship Tournament for First Time Since 1974 With 91-90 Double-OT Win at San Bernardino Valely

Sophomore Shane Carney hit a layup in the closing seconds to force a second overtime and scored six points in the second OT to help the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team outlast San Bernardino Valley 91-90 in double overtime on Saturday in the Southern Regional Finals. Seeded No. 7 in the south, the Bulldogs pulled off their second upset on the road in the postseason and improved to 23-9 overall. They punched their first ticket to the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championship Tournament since 1974, when the Bulldogs won the state championship. The Wolverines, seeded second in the region, finished the season 27-5 overall.

Carney finished with a career-high 32 points to go with five rebounds and five assists. The sophomore went 10-for-23 from the field, but just 3-for-14 from 3-point range. He went 9-for-11 from the free-throw line in the program's first regional final since 1990.

Freshman Glenn Jordan added 17 points with a 3-for-4 effort from 3-point territory and a perfect 4-for-4 performance from the line. Jordan went 5-for-8 overall from the field.

Devin Davis added 11 points and 12 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season, while John Riddick contributed 10 points and blocked three shots off the bench to give Hancock four scorers in double-digits. Shemarr Parker started in place of injured Spirit Ricks and added eight points before fouling out of the game.

The Wolverines dominated the first 12 minutes of the game and built a 26-11 lead with 8:33 to play on a pair of free throws by Noah Bigirumwami. The Bulldogs fought their way back to climb to within 34-31 at intermission. Carney led the way with 11 points, Jordan added seven and Riddick scored six points off the bench for the Bulldogs, who shot 34 percent in the first 20 minutes.

In the second half, Jordan buried a 3-pointer to tie it 40-40 less than three minutes after intermission. Davis buried a 3-point bucket from atop the arc to give Hancock its first lead of the game 43-30 with 16:27 remaining. Carney hit a runner, then on the next Bulldog possession hit a layup, drew the foul and converted a 3-point play to push Hancock's lead to 48-42 with 13:55 left in the game. San Bernardino stormed all the way back to take a one-point lead with 2:40 to play at 65-64. The two teams exchanged one-point leads the rest of the way. Shemarr Parker hit the second of two free throws to tie it 67-67 with 0:49 remaining in regulation. Parker missed a shot from inside in the closing seconds sending the game into overtime.

The Wolverines built a four-point lead with less than a minute remaining in overtime, but Jordan hit a 3-pointer to make it a one-point game with 0:30 left. The Wolverines drew a foul and made one-of-two free throws with 0:13 remaining. Hancock rebounded the missed shot and Carney drove it all the way in to hit a running layup and tie it at 79-79 with five seconds left to play and send it to a second overtime.

After missing from long-range the entire game, Carney hit his first 3-pointer early in the second overtime to give Hancock an 83-80 advantage. Carney, Davis and Diego Lucas each buried a pair of free throws and Kevin Baines added a key rebound and put-back to help the Bulldogs outscore the Wolverines 12-11 in the second overtime. The Wolverines had a chance to win it in the closing seconds, but Kevin McNeal missed a jumper at the free-throw line with five seconds remaining and the Bulldogs ahead by one. Baines grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He missed both free throws with two seconds remaining, but SBVC's full-court shot at the buzzer fell short to prompt a Hancock celebration.

McNeal led the Wolverines with 33 points and Kendall Lauderdale added 21.

The Bulldogs, now one of the final four teams in the Southern Regional, advanced to next week's State Championship Tournament at Ventura College. Also advancing from the south: No. 5 Cerritos (26-5) after defeating Santiago Canyon 95-75; No. 1 San Diego City (30-2) after topping Ventura 91-84; and No. 6 Orange Coast, an 80-77 winner at No. 3 Citrus.

The final-four teams from the south will be joined in the Elite Eight by the north's final-four teams, Fresno, Santa Rosa, Yuba and San Francisco. The next round of games will take place on Friday, March 9 at Ventura College. Games will take place at 1, 3, 5 and 7 p.m. The Final Four will take place on Saturday, March 10, and the state championship game on Sunday, March 11.

Overall, Hancock shot 43 percent in the game and went 8-for-24 from 3-point range. The Bulldogs hit 29 of their 40 free throws or 72 percent. The Wolverines shot 37 percent overall and 26 percent from beyond-the-arc. The Wolverines shot 74 percent from the line by hitting 32 of 43 free throws. Hancock lost the rebounding battle 45-41, but held a 32-26 edge on points in the paint.
