Hancock's Magical March Madness Ends in CCCAA State Quarterfinals to San Francisco

After a red-hot start, the Allan Hancock College men's basketball could not keep up with the No. 1 team in the state as the Bulldogs' memorable March Madness run ended Friday with an 86-63 loss to City College of San Francisco in the quarterfinals of the CCCAA State Championship Tournament at Ventura College. The Bulldogs finished the season 23-10 overall and racked up some impressive statistics along the way: most wins in a single-season since 2001; first playoff win since 2001; first regional finals appearance since 1990; and first state tournament game since 1974. Hancock's postseason included a first-round bye, an overtime win at No. 7 Fullerton and a double-overtime win at No. 2 San Bernardino. City College advanced to the Final Four and improved to 31-2 overall.

Hancock started red-hot and hit their first five shots of the game to build a 13-8 lead less than four minutes into the game. Shane Carney and Glenn Jordan each hit two 3-pointers in the early going. A 3-pointer from the corner by Shemarr Parker helped Hancock take its biggest lead of the game at 19-13 with 13:28 to play. The Rams buckled down and took control of the rest of the half, outscoring Hancock 25-12 over the next 10 minutes to take a 38-31 lead. The Rams carried a 44-36 lead into intermission. Carney led the Bulldogs with 13 points at the break. Jordan and freshman forward Mayowa Akinsanya added six points apiece. The Bulldogs shot 56 percent in the first half, while the Rams shot 43 percent.

The Bulldogs and Rams went back and forth in the second half, but the Bulldogs could not climb any closer than six points in the final 20 minutes. Hancock shot 26 percent in the second half, compared to 44 percent for the Rams.

Carney led the Bulldogs with a game-high 23 points to go with four rebounds and three assists. The sophomore went 7-for-22 overall from the field and 4-for-15 from 3-point range. He finished his Hancock career with program records for most 3-pointers made in a single-season with 102 and most career 3-pointers made with 160.

Devin Davis added 11 points and seven rebounds. The sophomore went 5-for-12 from the floor. Jordan finished with 10 points behind a 3-for-9 effort from the floor and 2-for-5 mark from beyond-the-arc. Akinsanya finished with eight points and seven rebounds, while John Riddick finished with four blocks and four rebounds.

Terrell Brown led the Rams with 22 points and nine rebounds. Eddie Stansberry finished with 17 points.

Overall, San Francisco shot 44 percent from the field and Hancock shot 38 percent. Hancock went 7-for-23 from 3-point range, while the Rams went 9-for-25. Hancock outrebounded the Rams 38-37.

The Bulldogs committed 17 turnovers that led to 22 San Francisco points. The Rams committed just six turnovers.

San Francisco plays Cerritos at 7p.m. Saturday in the Final Four, while San Diego battles Fresno City at 5 p.m. The winners advance to Sunday's state championship game.
