The Week Ahead for Hancock Athletics

It promises to be another action-packed week for Allan Hancock College athletics. The football team hits the road for a huge test, while the men's soccer team opens Western State Conference play at home and the women's volleyball team looks to continue its momentum at home against Bakersfield.

FOOTBALL (0-2)

This Week: Sat. 9/20, @ No.10 Chaffey College, 4 p.m. in Rancho Cucamonga

The Bulldogs head to Rancho Cucamonga this weekend to face a tough test in Chaffey College, the 10th ranked team in this week's State Poll and fourth ranked squad in Southern California.  Saturday's game at Grigsby Field will be the first meeting between the two programs.

Hancock is coming off a tough 33-27 loss at home to Santa Barbara City College. The Bulldogs led 27-23 with nearly eight minutes to play, but SBCC outscored Hancock 10-0 the rest of the way. Quarterback Curry Parham (St. Joseph) completed 12 of his 32 passes for 175 yards. He threw three touchdown passes, but was intercepted twice. Lauina Futi led the Bulldogs with 66 yards rushing on 12 carries, while Jaylin Ameron added 60 yards on 11 touches. Tristen Jeffires caught four passes for 107 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown, his third of the season, to give Hancock a 27-23 lead in the fourth quarter. Breon Briggs had five catches for 66 yards, including a 27-yard TD reception, while Ryan Mediano caught an 8-yard touchdown. Linebacker Eric Wilson (Righetti HS) and cornerback Logan Sprouse (Atascadero HS) recorded interceptions for Hancock.

Chaffey is 2-0 after defeating Orange Coast 17-14 to open the season and Moorpark 34-20 last week. Panthers wide receiver Alec Dana was named the Central League's Player of the Week after he caught 12 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns last week. Quarterback Levi Plante, a freshman, threw for 429 yards on 32 for 48 passing and four touchdowns.  

MEN'S SOCCER (0-3-1)

This Week: Tuesday, 9/16, vs. LA Mission College *, 4 p.m.

                  Friday, 9/19, @ Santa Barbara City College *, 4 p.m.

After a 0-3-1 preseason, the men's soccer team kicks off Western State Conference play on its home field on Tuesday against L.A. Mission College. The Bulldogs lost 3-1 at home last Saturday to Las Positas. Adrian Diaz scored the lone goal for Hancock.

LA Mission is 2-1-1 to open the season. Sophomore forward Ericson Penate leads the team with six goals, three of which came in a 4-2 win at Pasadena.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL (4-1)

This Week : Wednesday, 9/17, vs. Bakersfield, 6 p.m.

                        Saturday, 9/20, @ Fullerton Quad, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m,

The women's volleyball team hosts Bakersfield Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs splits two five-set matches over the weekend. They lost 2-3 (26-28, 17-25, 25-23, 26-24, 12-15) against College of the Desert, despite 21 kills from Brianna Farley (Cabrillo High School) and 19 from Gabrielle Lecates. Farley and Lauren Powell led the squad with 23 digs apiece. The Bulldogs bounced back the following day to stun Cerro Coso in five after dropping the first two sets (18-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-17 and 15-10). Farley again led the Bulldogs with 23 kills and 19 digs, while Lecates fired off 15 kills to go with 13 digs.

Bakersfield starts the week 1-3 after dropping its last three matches.

The Bulldogs' four victories this season are the most in the single-season since Hancock went 9-14 in 2010.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (0-3)

This Week: Tuesday, 9/16, vs. West Hills College, 2 p.m.

            Thursday, 9/18, @ College of the Sequoias, 4 p.m. (COS Tournament)

            Friday, 9/19, vs. Cerro Coso, 4 p.m. (COS Tournament)

The women's soccer team battles West Hills on Tuesday afternoon looking to close its season-opening four-game home stand with a victory.

Hancock fell 3-1 to West L.A. over the weekend.  Berenice Miguel (Santa Maria HS) scored the lone goal for Hancock, while Jennifer Justice (Lompoc HS) was credited with the assist.
