Guzman Records Hat-Trick, Hancock Upsets No. 4 Oxnard 5-2

Freshman Jorge Guzman scored a hat-trick, and Miguel Fregoso scored once and recorded two assists to lead the Allan Hancock College men's soccer team to an upset 5-2 win over Oxnard Tuesday afternoon in Santa Maria. The victory, Hancock's second straight win, improved the Bulldogs' record to 2-5-1 in Western State Conference play and 3-8-2 overall. Oxnard, the three-time defending conference champions and No. 4 team in the state poll, fell to 6-1-1 in league and 8-2-2 overall.  The Bulldogs handed Oxnard its first conference loss since September 17,2013.

The Condors struck first with a goal in the 21st minute. Hancock scored the equalizer in the 27th minute on Guzman's first goal on an assist from sophomore Raul Muñoz. The game remained tied 1-1 into the second half when Oxnard regained the lead with a goal in the 49th minute. Oxnard had a chance to extend its lead, but Hancock goalie Humberto Figueroa blocked the Condors' penalty kick. The save kept Hancock in the game and shifted the momentum.

Hancock received a penalty kick in the 65th minute when the Condors were whistled for a penalty inside the box. Guzman, a Righetti High School graduate, tied the game 2-2 by converting the penalty kick. He gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the game in the 78th minute and completed his first collegiate hat-trick by finding the back of the net. Arroyo Grande High School graduate Miguel Fregoso assisted on the go-ahead goal. The freshman later scored himself in the 81st minute as Guzman returned the favor by assisting on Fregoso's second score of the season that made it 4-2 Bulldogs.

Hancock cemented the victory in the 88th minute with a goal from Bernardo Rubio. Fregoso was credited with the assist on Rubio's third goal of the year.

Hancock will go for its third straight conference win this Friday, Oct. 16, when L.A. Mission visits Santa Maria at 4 p.m.
