Hancock Soccer's Christian Merino Signs with Holy Names University

When Christian Merino finished his freshman year at Allan Hancock College in May, he planned to play another year for the Bulldogs before transferring to a four-year university. Turns out, his hard work paid off ahead of schedule. Merino has signed a National Letter of Intent to play men's soccer at Holy Names University, a Division II-program in Oakland. With three years of eligibility, Merino will enroll at Holy Names this fall and redshirt the 2016 season with the Hawks.

"I am thrilled for the opportunity to play at the next level," said Merino. "I always planned to play at a four-year university, but now that I am, it's feels unreal."

Moreno was a two-time all-league soccer player at Arroyo Grande High School. He played 17 games as a freshman midfielder at Hancock in 2015. He recorded one assist for the Bulldogs.

"I am sad we don't have him back this year, but I am so excited for him to take his education and soccer career to the next level," said Hancock's third-year head coach Billy Vinnedge. "Christian can control the middle of the soccer field and be a leader on and off the field for Holy Names."

The Hawks compete in the Pacific West Conference. With 14 men's soccer programs located throughout California, Hawaii and Utah, the PacWest is the largest Division II conference in the west region. The Hawks finished 2-15-1 last season. They open the 2016 season Sunday, September 4 at California State University, East Bay.

After three years as an assistant coach at Academy of Art, David Frank was named Holy Names' new head coach less than three months ago. Frank initially recruited Merino to attend Academy of Art, but offered Merino a scholarship to Holy Names after taking over his new post.

"I had a great time at Hancock," said Merino, who will have three years of eligibility remaining at Holy Names. "I played with a lot of talented players and enjoyed playing for coach Billy. I know I'll represent the Bulldog family well at the next level and make everyone proud."

Merino has not declared a major at Holy Names, but he is leaning toward a degree in sports management or business.

The Hancock men's soccer team kicks off the 2016 season Friday, August 26 at Taft College.
