Hancock Men's Soccer Opens Season with 2-0 Shutout Against Monterey

Migel Gomez and Alex Herrera each scored once to lead a solid all-around effort by the Allan Hancock College men's soccer team in the Bulldogs' 2-0 season-opening win over Monterey Peninsula on Friday in Santa Maria. The Bulldogs won their first season opener since 2010.

Gomez, an all-conference forward as a freshman, scored the first goal in the 24th minute to put the Bulldogs ahead for good. The Cabrillo High School graduate took eight shots on the day, half of them were on frame.

The Bulldogs padded their lead in the 66th minute when Jose Sanchez, a freshman midfielder, fed Herrera who buried it in the back of the net. The Lompoc High School graduate's first collegiate goal give Hancock a 2-0 advantage.

Freshman goal keeper Antony Herrera, a Righetti High School graduate, posted a shutout in the net for Hancock.

The Bulldogs finished with 20 shots overall, nine on goal.

The Bulldogs will continue their three-game homestand Tuesday, August 29, at 4 p.m. when Bakersfield comes to town. Hancock will host Taft on Friday, September 1 p.m.
