Conference Opener Ends in Loss for Hancock Men's Soccer Team

The Allan Hancock College men's soccer team came up short against Santa Barbara City College on Oct. 10, with a 4-2 loss in their first Western State Conference match of the season.

The Vaqueros scored in the 9th minute to take an early lead. Hancock's Migel Gomez tied the game in the 21st minute with an unassisted goal.

Gomez assisted on a goal by Ulysses Cardona in the 48th minute to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-1.

"We played a great first half and kept it up through most of the second half," said Hancock head coach Billy Vinnedge.

The Vaqueros went on to score three goals against the Bulldogs.

"We played a good game," said Vinnedge. "We had our chance to open the game up, we just didn't do it. It shows we're a good team and can compete with anyone but you have to give credit to Santa Barbara – they are undefeated for a reason."

Gomez leads the Western State Conference North in assists (13) and points (27). Cardona is ranked first in the conference for goals (8), and second for points (20).

Hancock is now 8-3-2 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. Their next WSC match is at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13, when they host Santa Monica College.
