Springer Wins Men's Discus Throw Title and Finishes Runner-Up in Shot Put at WSC Finals

(Santa Barbara, CA) Jared Springer won the men's discus throw and finished runner-up in the shot put during the Western State Conference Track and Field Finals on Friday at Santa Barbara City College. Kendrick Keszler finished sixth in the men's triple jump

The Santa Barbara City College men won the title, their first in at least 45 years, with 138 points. The Vaqueros edged College of the Canyons by 10 points. West Los Angeles finished third with 124.5 and Cuesta took fourth with 110.5. The Bulldogs finished ninth in the 10-team field.

Springer, a freshman, won his first career conference title, by finishing first in the men's discus throw final with a top mark of 144 feet, nine inches. His best throw came on his third throw of the day. He edged runner-up John Morgan of Santa Barbara by 15 inches. The Nipomo High School graduate finished second in the men's shot put final with a top throw of 45-4.25. Marvin Magg of SBCC won with a top mark of 45-8.

Springer finished runner-up in the men's hammer throw final last week and broke his own school record by 11 feet with a top mark of 146-10. Springer qualified for next week's Southern California Preliminaries with top six finishes in the shot put, hammer throw and discus throw.

Keszler's top mark in the triple jump was 43 feet, 9.75 inches to qualify for the SoCal Prelims with his sixth place finish. The freshman finished seventh in the javelin throw final last week with a top throw of 146-10.

Hancock's Travis Eskew came in ninth in the men's pole vault with a top clearance of 10-5.25. Khalil Mondol also cleared 10-5.25, and finished in tenth because the sophomore required two more attempts than Eskew to clear 9-11.25.

Keszler, Springer and Brent Dionisio, who finished fourth last week in the men's high jump final, will represent the Bulldogs in the SoCal Prelims, which will be Saturday, May 2, at Cerritos College.
