Nevitt Finishes 8th in Shot Put, 10th in Discus Throw at State Championships

Allan Hancock College freshman Taylor Nevitt finished eighth in the women's shot put and 10th in the discus throw finals at the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Track and Field Championships at San Diego Mesa College on Saturday. The Nipomo High School graduate was the first Hancock female participant in a state meet in four years.

In the shot put, Nevitt set a personal best on the third throw of the preliminary round with a mark of 40 feet, 8.25 inches. She earned three more throws, but did not surpass 40-8.25. Nevitt's eighth-place finish earned one point for Hancock in the team standings. The left-hander qualified for state with a sixth place finish at the Southern California Regionals last week with a then-personal-best 39-6.5.

During the discus final, Nevitt fouled on her first throw. She reached 120 feet, nine inches on her second throw, and 124 feet on her third and final attempt. Nevitt qualified for state by finishing second in the discus at the Southern California Regional Finals with a personal-best mark of 134-4.

Cerritos sophomore Destiny Mack-Talalemotu won state titles in both of Nevitt's events. She won the shot put with a mark of 48-3.5, and took the discus throw title with a mark of 155-8.

The Cerritos women defended their state title with 92 points. It marked their sixth state championship in the last 11 years. Riverside came in second with 80 points, and College of the Sequoias finished third with 75.33 points.

The men from Mt. San Antonio College won their second straight state title with 148 points. Riverside City College finished second with 99 points, and Modesto in third place with 63 points.

Hancock freshmen Luke Nickelson and Rachel Naugle did not compete at state. Despite top-six finishes at the Southern California Regionals, they did not qualify automatically for one of the 12 spots at state. None of the qualifying athletes withdrew from the men's long jump or the women's 5,000 meter run to free up a spot for either Bulldog.
