Bulldogs Top Cuesta 6-2 to Clinch Share of First WSC Title Since 1998

A four-run sixth inning capped by a three-run home run from Missy Regalado powered the Allan Hancock College softball team to a 6-2 win over rival Cuesta on Thursday afternoon. The victory came in the Bulldogs' first game on its newly renovated field and secured the program's first conference title since 1998.

The Bulldogs improved to 13-3 in Western State Conference play and 24-13 for the season. The Cougars finished conference play 13-5. Hancock will be able to clinch the outright championship with at least one win over Ventura in their doubleheader next Tuesday.

The Cougars scored a run in the top of the first against Hancock's Katie Chenault. The Bulldogs evened the score in the bottom half after Kristine Ramos singled to leadoff the inning and Jessica Rothanzl walked. Regalado sacrificed the runners into scoring position. Chenault hit with a groundball to shortstop and Ramos beat the tag at home plate to score the tying run.

Cuesta regained the lead with a run in the fourth 2-1, but Hancock tied it in the bottom of the fifth when Regalado scored on a wild pitch.

Hancock took the lead for good in the sixth when Ramos hit a RBI-triple to bring home Megan Love to make it 3-2 Bulldogs. After Rothanzl drew a walk, Reglado clubbed a three-run home run to secure the victory.

Regalado, Ramos and Tiana McWhorter had two hits apiece as the Bulldogs collected nine hits compared to three by the Cougars.

Chenault added to his state-leading strikeout total by sitting down 10 Cougars on strikes. She owns 337 strikeouts this season. The Righetti High School graduate was named the California Community College Athletic Association's Female Athlete of the Month earlier in the day. The freshman became the first Hancock female athlete to receive the statewide honor since Camille Zumbro in January 2011.

Hancock closes the regular season next Tuesday with a doubleheader against Ventura. One win secure the outright title for the Bulldogs. The games are set to begin at 1 and 3 p.m.
