No. 12 Hancock Upsets No. 3 Cypress Behind Regalado and Chenault

Cypress became the latest ranked team to go down at the hands of the Bulldogs and Katie Chenault. The Allan Hancock College softball team upset Cypress, the third ranked team in California and second ranked team in the Southern California Regional, 1-0 to close day one of a tournament hosted by Ventura on Saturday. The No.12 Bulldogs extended their winning streak to 20 and improved to 22-2-1. Cypress fell to 21-6.

Chenault dominated in the circle. The sophomore scattered four hits and two walks. She struck out 14 to give her 27 strikeouts in 14 innings on the day to pick up two victories.

Hancock recorded seven hits in the game, including two apiece from Jessica Rothanzl, Missy Regalado and Judith Salazar. Freshman Ashley Ruiz added a basehit.

The Bulldogs scored the only run of the game in the third inning. With two outs and nobody on base, Rothanzl reached on an error by the Cypress shortstop. Missy Regalado made Cypress pay for the error with a double to the right-center field wall to score Rothanzl for the only run of the game.

Cypress threatened to tie the game in the seventh with two singles and one walk against Chenault.  The Righetti High School graduate escaped the jam with the help of a catcher Teanna Silveira, who threw out a runner trying to steal second for the second out of the inning.
