Silveria, Salazar and Chenault Lead Hancock into Super Regionals with 10-1 Win

A two-run double by freshman catcher Teanna Silveira broke open a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning, and Katie Chenault struck out 10 as the Allan Hancock College softball team advanced to the second round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs with an 8-1 win over San Diego Mesa College on Saturday. The Bulldogs, who are the second seed, will host a four-team Super Regional next Friday through Sunday. Hancock improved to 35-2-1, while San Diego Mesa saw its season end at 17-17 after falling two straight games to the Bulldogs.

Chenault struck out 10 and allowed only three hits. The Olympians scored the first run of the game in the third inning on a two-out RBI-double by Sarah Pullman. The Bulldogs tied it in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly to left field off the bat of shortstop Missy Regalado allowed Michaela Valencia to tag up and score from third to tie 1-1.

The Bulldogs rallied in the fourth when Gianna Abatti drew a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Kayla Stevens with one out. Ashley Ruiz singled by the second baseman for the Bulldogs' first hit of the game. Silviera followed with a double to the right-center field gap to score both runners and give Hancock a 3-1 lead.

The Bulldogs added two more in the fifth when Regalado tripled and scored on a passed ball. Judith Salazar later hit a double to center and scored from second on an infield single deep in the hole between short and third that Ruiz beat out at first.

Salazar added a two-run triple in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Salazar, a freshman center fielder, as well as Ruiz and Regalado had two hits apiece.  Hancock collected eight hits to San Diego Mesa's three hits.

Valencia drew four walks, scored twice and stole two runs. Regalado scored twice, singled, tripled, walked and hit a sacrifice fly for a RBI.

As the number two seed, Hancock will play at 2 p.m. at home on Friday. The four-team regional will be a double-elimination tournament. The other three teams in the regional will be announced later on Sunday.
