Hancock Softball Opens Conference Title Defense with 30-1 Rout of Santa Monica

Freshman Crystal Gonzalez hit a grand slam and drove in six runs, Nakaila Fuggs drove in four, while Mallory Townsend, Mackenzie Baird, Zaiden Bakke and Alyssa Gonzalez each drove in three to lead the Allan Hancock College softball team to a 30-1 win in five innings on Thursday over visiting Santa Monica. The Bulldogs won their conference opener for the first time in three years to move to 1-0 in conference play and 8-3-1 overall. The Corsairs fell to 5-10 overall and 0-1 in league.

The Corsairs managed an unearned run in the top of the first inning against Hancock pitcher Hannah Diaz. Hancock outscored Santa Monica 30-0 the rest of the way behind two 12-run innings. Diaz allowed just two hits, one walk, one unearned run and struck out five over five innings to earn the victory.

Hancock scored 12 times in the first inning as Baird and Fuggs hit two-run doubles and Townsend hit a bases-loaded triple to push three more runs across the plate. Zaiden Bakke had an RBI-hit in the frame.

Hancock added four more in the second as Gonzalez hit a two-run triple and Bailey Killough followed with a run-scoring single. Baird and Alyssa Gonzalez delivered RBI-singles in the third to make it an 18-1 game. The Bulldogs erupted for 12 more in the fourth to cap the scoring as Sally Gonzalez hit a two-run double and Crystal Gonzalez slugged a grand slam in the frame.

Fuggs went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI and scored four times. Townsend scored four times, while Crystal Gonzalez, a Righetti High School graduate, hit a triple, home run, scored three times and drove in six. Killough went 2-for-4 with a triple, 3 RBI and scored four times. Baird went 4-for-5, falling a home run short of the cycle. The Cabrillo High School graduate hit a single, one double and two triples to go with 4 RBI and four runs scored. Alyssa Gonzalez finished 4-for-5 with 4 RBI.

Hancock hosts Mt. San Jacinto on Saturday, Feb. 24 in a non-conference doubleheader. The games are scheduled to begin at 12 and 2 p.m.
