Softball Tops SBCC with Walk-Off Single by Juarez-Wilhite

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - The Allan Hancock College softball team used some late-game heroics to pick up a crucial 8-7 league win over Santa Barbara City College on Tuesday afternoon.

Hancock (10-7, 4-3 WSC) surged ahead early with a three-run showing after Madison Gamble, Mya Mendoza, and Delayna Quezada drove in one run apiece. Both teams registered one run each with the Vaqueros (15-11, 3-4 WSC) scoring on a shot over the fence and Briana Munoz sending a runner home after a sacrifice fly to right. Alexia Juarez-Wilhite extended the lead in the third with an RBI single, but the visiting crew responded once more with a run of their own in the fourth.

Santa Barbara took the lead for a brief moment in the sixth after capitalizing on a pair of home errors that led to a four-run rally before Lisette Coria evened the odds by driving in one run in the bottom of the frame. An RBI single in the top of the seventh led to a one-run lead for the Vaqueros in the final inning. Xchelle Glidewell managed to knot the score with a deep single to right that plated one before Juarez-Wilhite used a single to plate the game-winner during the next at-bat.

Munoz picked up the win in the circle with a complete game. She scattered nine hits and struck out four runners through seven innings of work. Coria led the effort at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, followed by a pair of doubles from Mendoza after a 2-for-3 finish.

Up next for Coach Maumausolo's squad is a trek to face Porterville College for a non-conference doubleheader. Game one, which is set to begin at 1 PM on April 5th, can be watched live on the Pirate Athletics YouTube Channel.
