Hancock Women Lose 61-53 to Moorpark

Sophomore Justine Roland recorded a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, but the Hancock women fell 61-53 to Moorpark on Saturday in Joe White Memorial Gymnasium. 

   The Hancock women dropped to 2-5 in Western State Conference play and 12-10 for the season. Moorpark improved to 5-2 in league and 14-9 overall. The Raiders swept the season series from the Hancock women.

            Sydney Perry led the Lady Raiders with 21 points, while Ashley Ontiveros added 17 and Riley Abraham poured in 16 with nine rebounds. Moorpark made 21 of its 46 shots from the floor for a 45.7 percent mark.

Hancock freshman Celina Calderon made a layup to tie it at 39-39 with 11:48 to play. However, the Moorpark women regained the lead on its next possession and never relinquished it.

The Bulldogs stormed out of the gates and built an 8-2 lead with 16:35 to go in the first half. The Raiders recovered and took a 30-26 lead into halftime. Hancock shot 44.4 percent in the first 20 minutes, while Moorpark made 50 percent of its 20 shots.

The Hancock women shot 43.1 percent on the night on a 22 for 51 effort. They hit 7 of 12 from the free throw line (58.3 percent), while Moorpark made 16 of its 19 from the charity stripe (84.2 percent).

Ali Rodriguez went 4 for 12 from the field to finish with 11 points. Emma Weinreich and Nicole DeLaGuerra added eight points apiece.

Hancock returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 5, at Cuesta College. The women play at 5 p.m., with the met scheduled to go at 7 p.m.
