Freshmen McClain and Ramirez Lead Bulldogs to 59-44 Win at LA Southwest

Syenna Ramirez scored a game-high 17 points, while fellow freshman Kelly McClain added 10 points to lead the Allan Hancock College women's basketball team to a 59-44 win at LA Southwest College on Thursday evening. The Bulldogs improved to 3-1 and scored revenge on a nine-point loss to LA Southwest last year. The Cougars dropped to 0-4 in 2015.

Ramirez, a St. Joseph High School graduate, made five of her 10 shots from the field and seven of 14 free throws. The freshman added four rebounds, two assists and a career-high five steals.

McClain pulled down seven rebounds, including four offensive boards, to go with two steals, two assists and one block. She made four of nine shots from the field and both of her free throws.

Freshman guard Destinee Garcia added six points and a season-best five steals, while sophomore forward Michaila Miller made four of her five shots from the floor to finish the game with eight points and four rebounds.

Hancock made 22 of its 49 shots from the field (45 percent) and hit just one of six shots from three-point range. The Bulldogs made 14 of their 21 free throw attempts, or 67 percent.

The Bulldogs recorded a season-high 14 steals and a season-low seven turnovers in the victory. 

Hancock led 10-7 after the first quarter and carried a 23-19 lead into halftime. The Bulldogs took control of the game in the third quarter by outscoring LA Southwest 18-10.

The Bulldogs return to action at home Tuesday, Nov. 24, against Reedley College. The game will begin at 3 p.m. inside Joe White Memorial Gymnasium.
