Hancock Basketball to Host Carney's Coaches vs. Cancer Event Saturday, Jan. 23 against Cuesta College
The event was named in honor of assistant coach Larry Carney, a three-time cancer survivor. Last year, he donated $5,000 to find a cure for cancer in memory of his father and brother, who passed away from the disease.
In an effort to raise awareness and find a cure, as well as to honor survivors and those who lost their battles with cancer, Allan Hancock College will host its fifth annual Coaches vs. Cancer event on Saturday, January 23 when the basketball teams play Central Coast rival Cuesta College. The women will play at 3 p.m. and the men will follow at 5 p.m. inside Joe White Memorial Gymnasium.
All proceeds from ticket and concession sales, as well as the purchase of commemorative t-shirts during the event will go to the Marian Medical Center's Mission Hope Cancer Center.
"Every family, one way or another, has been affected by this disease. The Hancock family, including the athletics department has been impacted," said Hancock Athletic Director Kim Ensing. "The college wants to do its part to make a difference in this battle by raising awareness and help support cancer research and local services in our community."
Last year, the college renamed its annual Coaches vs. Cancer event to honor long-time assistant women's basketball coach Larry Carney, a three-time cancer survivor who has lost his father and brother to the disease. The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a nationwide campaign to empower coaches, their teams and communities to join the fight against cancer. Over the years, the program has raised nearly $90 million for the American Cancer Society.
Tickets to the game are $6 for adults, children under 17 years of age and seniors pay $3. Students and faculty get into the game for free.
