Beyers and Rosa Lead Hancock Women to 71-28 Win Over Taft

Freshman guard Karly Beyers sank five 3-pointers in a game-changing second quarter, and Grace Rosa recorded a double-double to lead the Allan Hancock College women's basketball team to a dominant 71-28 win over Taft on Thursday evening. The Bulldogs improved to 2-1 after their 43-point victory inside Joe White Memorial Gymnasium. Beyers and Rosa led a quartet of Hancock players who scored 10 or more points in the game.

Rosa scored eight points in the first quarter to help the Bulldogs take a 12-7 after the first quarter. The Paso Robles High School graduate finished with a career-high 14 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, seven came on the offensive end of the floor for her first career double-double. The center made seven of her 15 shots from the floor, blocked two shots and had five assists.

Beyers came to life in the second quarter and hit five 3-point buckets on seven shots from beyond-the-arc. Thanks to 15 points from the Pioneer Valley High School graduate, the Bulldogs outscored the Cougars 27-8 in the second quarter. Destinee Garcia added six points and three steals in the quarter, and Rosa scored four more to help Hancock take a 39-17 into halftime. The Bulldog defense forced nine Taft turnovers in the quarter.

Syenna Ramirez and Garcia each had 10 points for Hancock. Ramirez, an All-Conference First Team pick as a freshman, hit four of 11 shots from the field. She pulled down seven rebounds and dished out five assists Garcia made five of her 13 shots from the field to go with five rebounds, four assists and three steals. 

Freshman point guard Taylor Lee-Hammer had five points, two assists and three steals. Naomi Leopardi added four points, eight rebounds and two assists. Freshman Anamarie Fruge came off the bench to add five points.

The Hancock defense forced 24 Taft turnovers that turned into 33 points. Fueled by 21 offensive rebounds, the Bulldogs had 22 second-chance points. Hancock limited Taft to 19 percent shooting from the field as the Cougars only hit eight of their 42 shots.

Hancock shot 41 percent from the field by sinking 29 of  its 71 shots, including an eight-for-17 effort from 3-point range. Hancock also hit five of its six free throws.

The Bulldogs outrebounded Taft 45 to 25, had 23 assists and committed 13 turnovers. The Hancock bench also outscored the Taft reserves 28 to 3.

Hancock will return to action at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22, when the Bulldogs travel to Reedley.
