Hancock Women Drop 76-50 Decision at First Place Ventura

Sophomore guard Syenna Ramirez scored 14 points and freshman Karly Beyers added 11 points, but the Allan Hancock College women's basketball team lost at first place Ventura 76-50 to begin the second half of conference action Saturday. The Bulldogs fell to 3-3 in Western State Conference play and 14-8 overall. Ventura, the No. 10 team in the state, stayed perfect in league at 6-0 and 21-5 overall.

Ramirez and Taylor Lee-Hammer scored seven points apiece in the first quarter as the Bulldogs trailed 19-16 after the first 10 minutes of the game. The second quarter was a different story because the Bulldogs committed 10 turnovers and were outscored 14 to six to trail 33-22 at halftime. 

Ramirez went 6-for-14 from the field, and 2-for-9 from 3-point range. The St. Joseph High School graduate added four rebounds, three assists, and three steals.  Beyers went 3-for-8 from 3-point range, and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. The freshman added four rebounds.

Lee-Hammer and freshman center Grace Rosa finished with 10 points apiece.

Overall, Hancock shot 41 percent from the field, and 30 percent from 3-point range. Hancock committed 26 turnovers that led to 25 Ventura points. On the flip side, Ventura committed 11 turnovers that led to six Hancock points.

Ventura is gunning for its 27th straight conference title. The Pirates have lost just six conference games during that span.

The Pirates shot 46 percent overall and 27 percent from 3-point territory. Katie Campbell led the Pirates with 25 points on a 6-for-12 effort from 3-point range. Campbell added five rebounds and four steals. Davina Del Castillo finished with 13 points, six rebounds, and five steals for Ventura.

Hancock will return home to host Moorpark at 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 8. The day will also mark the 3rd annual Carney's Coaches vs. Cancer event to benefit the Mission Hope Cancer Center. All sales from tickets, commemorative t-shirt, and snack bar sales will help support local people battling cancer.
