Trio of Sophomores Leads Hancock Women's Basketball to 65-62 Overtime Win at Taft

Sophomore Grace Rosa scored a season-high 21 points to lead a trio of Bulldogs with 11 or more points as the Allan Hancock College women's basketball team outlasted Taft 65-62 in overtime Wednesday evening on the road. The Bulldogs, who closed a three-game season-opening road trip, improved to 2-1. Taft fell to 1-3.

Hancock was in control for the first three quarter, holding leads of 16-7 after the first quarter, 26-16 at halftime and 40-27 after three quarters. However, Taft outscored Hancock 28-15 in the fourth quarter, including a game-tying 3-pointer that banked in with seconds remaining to send the game to overtime. The Bulldogs outscored Taft 10-7 in the extra period to pull out the road win.

Rosa recorded her second straight double-double with 21 points on 10-for-15 shooting from the field and 10 rebounds. The sophomore also had two steals and tied a career high with four blocked shots.

Sophomore guard Taylor Lee-Hammer went 7-for-11 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the line to finish with 17 points. She added five steals, four rebounds and three steals. Karly Beyers filled the stat sheet with 11 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

Sophomores Vanessa Ortiz and Anamarie Fruge each scored six points for the Bulldogs. Fruge was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line to go with four rebounds, two assists and one steal. Ortiz grabbed five rebounds, including three offensive boards, to go with her career-high six points.

Hancock finished 27-for-54 from the field, despite going 0-for-4 from 3-point range. The Bulldogs shot 69 percent from the free-throw line by hitting 11 of 16. The Bulldogs compiled 19 assists, nine steals and seven blocked shots.

The Bulldogs will open the home portion of their schedule next Tuesday, November 21, against Reedley College. Tipoff in Joe White Memorial Gymnasium will be at 3 p.m.
