Hancock Women's Basketball Loses 70-48 to No. 10 Ventura in First-Place Showdown

Despite 15 points from Taylor Lee-Hammer and 13 by Karly Beyers, the Allan Hancock College women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of Ventura, the No. 10 team in the state, 70-48 in a Western State Conference game on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs fell to 4-2 in league and 12-10 overall. Ventura improved to 6-0 in conference and 20-6 on the year.

The Bulldogs took an early lead in the game as Hannah Walls hit a 3-pointer and Lee-Hammer scored a layup and a three to give Hancock a 10-8 lead midway through the first quarter. Ventura came back to carry an 18-15 lead into the second quarter. The Pirates outscored Hancock 22-9 in the second quarter and led 40-24 at intermission.

Lee-Hammer finished the day 5-for-11 from the field and 1-for-6 from 3-point range. The sophomore made 4-of-7 from the free-throw line to finish with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Beyers hit 4-of-12 from the field, and 5-of-6 from the line to finish with 13 points, six rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Walls accounted for eight points and seven rebounds. The sophomore hit 2-of-7 from 3-point range and sank both of her free throws. Grace Rosa added seven points and four rebounds.

On the day, Hancock shot 35 percent overall. The Bulldogs went 4-for-21 from 3-point range and 12-for-17 from the line.

Ventura shot 47.6 percent in the game, and went 8-for-27 from 3-point range. The Pirates outrebounded Hancock 35 to 31. Jasmyne Martin led the Pirates with a game-high 25 points, while Davina Del Castillo and Nikki Puga finished with 15 points each.

The college hosted its annual Carney's Coaches vs. Cancer event on Saturday. Each player and coach presented a rose to someone in the stands in honor of a cancer survivor. The college also presented a check for $3,500 to Marian Regional Medical Center's Mission Hope Cancer Center in a special ceremony. The donation will help the center provide services to local cancer patients and their families. Hancock sponsor, Home Motors Chevrolet, also presented a check for $2,500 to Mission Hope Cancer Center.

The Bulldogs will hit the road Wednesday, Feb 7, for a second-place showdown at Moorpark. Both teams are 4-2 in league play. The Bulldogs limited the Raiders to 19 percent shooting last week in a 35-29 win at Joe White Memorial Gymnasium.
